no that is NOT true.
go to your ASP and ask for the MXM-III 8800GS modul.
they will get it from apple and install it into your imac 24" alu >= late 2007 !
no 20" model is supported, because the MXM-III module is a bit larger than the 2600PRO an the MXM-II.
i was told that it is quite expensive, but tomorrow the price will be calculated.
if i bought a 24" 2.4Ghz modell iMac than i would sell it to get a newer one,
but i bought the 2.8er modell and if i look at running cod4 there are only 50% peaks for the CPU's
but the GPU is far to slow if you want to play it in high details and full res.

that's right, i can't do it by myself.
it can be done by an asp (appleserviceprovider)
the card costs and installation cost below 500 EUR.
I got a 24" 2.8 and i would buy that upgrade for <500EUR.

Apple only does certified upgrades, you can't simply buy hardware and ask them to do the dirty work, hence the $1000 job quoted above, although I'd be surprised if you could even get Apple to do it with certified parts.

I assume this is a question, and I'll go with likely never. Without any sort of real way for consumer driven upgrades, the market probably isn't there. There may be some bold daring soul with extremely astute prowess who may complete such an upgrade but at the cost I just don't see it happening. This isn't like the Mez slot on the Rev B 233 MHz iMacs that is somewhat accessible all those years ago. The previous Macs using the MXM interface weren't accessible at all, and they were soldiered on the board. There were a few souls who attempted with the white iMacs to use other MXM cards but as I recall no one ever did anything more than factory 7300 to an Apple OEM 7600. Probably even worse news than that is just how little attention the MXM gets as whole, let alone on the Mac side. If it weren't for Mac evangelists jumping the gun on the intel iMacs being upgradable, I'd never had heard of MXM and still wouldn't have to this day.

Considering how little I've heard about the new iMacs and MXM, I'm assuming there's been no success stories. As said, if you want to upgrade, it'd be cheaper to buy a new iMac and sell off your old iMac. I'd assume 24 inch intel iMacs fetch a good deal of money considering I was able to fetch $800.... for my PowerMac 2 GHz G5 last month.

i don't know if it is possible to get a 4850 working in my 2.8 iMac, but i asked him to verify that.
before he told me, that it is much cheaper if he could send the changed card back, but apple does not pay for
an other one, which means that there will be no cashback for the 2600pro.
i don't like nvidia, so i decided NOT to change to the 8800gs, but now i want to do it, because i like ati
and the 4850 is very powerfull.
