Feral Interactive has announced it will release the Intel Mac version of Rome: Total War Gold Edition in March. SEGA’s top-rated strategy game will be released by Feral as the second in the series of Feral Legends titles. The Gold Edition features Total War and its expansion Barbarian Invasion.

“The Total War series is one of the most-requested additions to Mac gaming” said Feral Interactive’s David Stephen. “It’s a game that is superbly suited to the platform and one that will be available to all Intel Mac owners including those with Macbooks”

Encompassing three centuries of warfare from the late Roman Republic and early Roman Empire, Rome: Total War is regarded as one of the best strategy games ever with a seamless integration of strategic and tactical modes and featuring a 3d graphics engine that is capable of rendering over 10,000 soldiers on a single battlefield.

Players take charge of one of three Roman families with the goal of increasing their family's power in Rome through diplomacy, economic skill, and of course, war! Players can fight epic historical or fictitious battles while negotiating a century-spanning campaign across Europe and Africa.

Making the appearance of Rome: Total War on the Mac even more compelling is the inclusion of the official expansion pack, Barbarian Invasion . Set some 300 years later, players must decide whether they will save Rome from its enemies or, at the head of a Barbarian faction, fight to destroy it.
Minimum system requirements:

• 1.8GHz Intel Mac only
• 512MB RAM
• 128MB graphics card
• DVD drive
• 3.5 GB of hard disk space
• Mac OS X v10.4 or later
• The game DOES support Intel GMA processors
The game will retail in North America for US $29.95, £19.95 (inc VAT) in the UK and €24.95 (inc VAT) throughout Europe. It is currently available to pre-order from Feral's online store.

I loved Shogun Total War. I hope Rome Total War is just as fun.

I think the UK price is decent enough for a new Mac game.  Dedicated Mac gamers who love RTS should have little excuse not to buy.

I feel compelled to clarify that Rome *will* run on the GMA integrated graphics cards! So MacBook and Mac Mini owners need not fear. The earlier press release contained an error. :)

Aww man. I've wanted this for ages, and now it's Intel only. Bah.

Maybe we can't run Quake Wars, etc. But R:TW, easily. Pretty please...

When there's a multiplayer version, I'm going to be on Frost's team. Well, except he doesn't seem to actually need a team...I mean, what's the point? "Hey look, it's Frost and His Merry Gang of Useless Hangers-On!" Or something.

Time to upgrade to intel :)... it's the future.

Seriously, I'm not a huge RTS person, but I may pick this up for that price.

The game isn't a real RTS, and that's a good thing. The main campaign is turn-based, while you can always pause the real-time battles to issue commands. It's definitely more about strategy than fast reflexes. Thank goodness for that. I can't stand RTSs anymore because they all boil down to who is faster.

This is why I like turned based games.  It becomes a battle of wits as opposed to a battle of reflexes.

There, fixed that for you. Kind of muddles your point, though. I'd guess you'd have to instead say something about how it's a larger scale than, say, StarCraft, and that micromanagement becomes less workable than actually trying to fight a battle.

Feral is doing a great job with their legends series: highly rated games that will run on a wide variety of hardware, at an appropriate price point. Can't wait to see what the next one will be.
Work: MacBook - 2.4 Ghz Core 2 Duo - 4GB RAM - X3100 graphics.
Home: Mini - 2.0 Ghz Core2Duo - 2 GB RAM - GeForce 9400 graphics.

What's the difference between strategy and tactics? I can never remember, like Stalactites and Stalagmites.

Oooh. GameInformer gave this game a relatively low score. Now I've got to get it when Feral releases the port. :3

(GI sucks. If they don't give it a high score and everyone else does, you _know_ it's going to be awesome.)

One grows up, the other grows down. Tactics are taking a hill, suppressing a building, etc. Strategy is logistics, training, weapons development, etc. TW is a series of real-time-tactical games (and turn-based strategy, I guess, but that's not the draw), i.e. you push lines across a battlefield. StarCraft is real-time-strategy, in that you build a base and do research, but on the battlefield which is kind of ridiculous in scope for a 'strategy' game, and its playstyle is dominated by micro-management/tactics anyways. Europa Universalis et al. are of proper scope to be called strategy.

I'll defer to the master, Carl Von Clausewitz: "Tactics is the art of using troops in battle; strategy is the art of using battles to win the war."

When you think of strategy, think longer term, overall military or political goals. Tactics are used to implement strategy.
