So, after I updated to 10.5.6 from 10.5.5, I noticed I could no longer pull up my shared folder on my XP machine. My mac simply vanished from the network group.
After finding no answers on the net, other than "woo woo 10.5.6 fixes file sharing!" (which is bullpopsnizzle), I started trial and error clicking every single fire trucking thing I could find in Network and Sharing on OSX.
Ok, so the old way, used to have an option on Sharing called "Windows File Sharing", that you could click on, and then set what users you would allow from a windows machine to link in and read/write files on your mac. Well, that option seems to have vanished. Now, only "File Sharing" is left. I check it ON, and then it says "File Sharing is Active", and lists some "Do Good Tooty Frooty Public Folder" as a shared item.
I change that to the PC-Crap shared folder, and set my user read/write to it, and no one else.
Nothing. No change on XP in seeing the Mac.
So, I click on "Options", which gives three ways you can share (all selectable, or none and all). It is currently set as "Share files and folders using AFP". Ok, thats fine for my other Mac, so, I need SMB turned on for the PC. So I click ON "Share files and folders using SMB" as well as the AFP option above it. I leave FTP off.
Well, nothing. No change on XP. Mac is still MIA.
%#%@$@ I SAY! Apple you horse popsnizzle assholes, what are you doing now?!
So, Anyhow, to cut a long story short, I finally got it working by UNCHECKING "AFP", and only leaving "SMB" checked. Now my mac shows up on XP and I am able to get/place files fine like I used too before 10.5.6. HOWEVER! Now since "AFP" is checked off, my mac is locked in windows sharing only (It actually now changed the text of "Files Sharing is ON" to "Windows File Sharing Enabled". W T F ? My other mac no longer sees this mac, because I have to have AFP OFF to share to my pc!
What bullpopsnizzle is this... I used to be able to share to both Mac and PC at the same fire trucking time before 10.5.6!
"File Sharing is fixed" my fire trucking rotten donkeyhole.
Oh, and to top it off, now every bloody window on my system has this huge dark grey banner on top "Shared Folder". Geezus hell Apple. What did you do? Hire Ex-MS Dropouts to program your fire trucking OSX now?!

well now, that is bizarre...
first things first, it most definitely shouldnt be sharing everything (hence the banner) unless you tell it that it can. Since it is showing that, it would appear that everything is available to anyone on your network... without a password...
so something has gone wrong here, and you should double check what youve set up.
Its working as expected here.
as for the name change in the options to "windows sharing is on", that makes sense from an information point of view, as it tells you without going into the options that only windows sharing is on. If you have windows and FTP, then it says windows sharing is on, ftp sharing is on. So really, its having AFP turned on which gives the wrong/not enough info.
unfortunately, I dont have a PC lying around to help out with the changes of the settings...
have you tried navigating to the smb address directly?
aside from all that, check the apple discussions forum, see if anyone else is having the same problem.
