Hi, anyone who can help-

I was wondering what the best settings are (in general) for my CRT 17" monitor?
These are the actual monitor settings I'm referring to from the monitor's dial setting (on screen digital set-up)
The settings I'm referring to are these:

1. OSD Position, what percent?
2. Under RGB setting, what percent of Red, Green, and Blue
3. Under Color Setting, (which is H:68.9KHZ and V:85HZ) What should the setting be, 9300K, User, or 6500K?
4. What does the Recall do exactly?
5. V.S. LINEAR. What percent?
6. V.C. LINEAR. What percent?
7. ZOOM. What percent?
8. PIN Balance. What Percent?
9. Parallelogram. What percent?
10. Trapezoid. What percent?
11. Pincushion. What percent?
12. V_Size. What percent?
13. H_Size. What percent?
14. V_Center. What percent?
15. H_Phase. What percent?
16. And last, but not least. Volume. What percent?
If there's anymore details you need, just ask. :)

Thank you very much for any tips and help!

There are no best settings in general. CRTs have those settings so that you adjust your monitor to your liking and so that you can compensate for manufacturing variances, environmental conditions, and aging.

If images on your screen looks good (eg, centered correctly, not too big or too small, not distorted (especially in the corners), etc.), then you can leave the settings alone. Most, if not all, settings can be adjusted without harming the monitor. So, you could play with some of them to see how they affect the image.
Truly, you have a dizzying intellect.

Also, its a personal preference how much 'padding' you give the image on the screen. When my Viewsonic CRT shipped to me, the settings for many resolutions were padded by an inch of blackness. However after adjusting the H/V width and location, I put the image right up to where the phosphors would clip. There is no distortion or color issues, and it allowed me to go to 1280x1024 res at a nice size.

Its all preference.

Now, when you get to the game level, you are sometimes forced to certain settings based on the game itself, or what your GPU can handle. But thats outside your monitor's OSD as anything you change on the monitor, doesn't affect anything on the computer.

Thank you!

I thought simple preferences would be the 'idea' of it all, simplified.

However, are monitor spiders necessary or recommended?

Oh, OK. If you were in a profession (or hobby) that needed a monitor calibrator, then you'd already know it. So, to answer your question, you do not need one. Are you having color problems with your monitor?

yes, Spyder is a brand name, there are other colour calibration tools out there from Lacie and some other company.
And as Bernie said, no you dont need one unless you already need one. If youre having colour problems, then you need to look at the colour profile of the screen, or consider that it might be a hardware problem (it could be broken after many years).
But unless youre working in film or photo and need colour accuracy, then no, you dont need one, or even need to consider getting one.

We won! Apple offer the 17" with a matte screen! Well... at a price...
