Mount & Blade Outstanding!

I'd heard people mention this game from time to time, but I didn't know anything about it except that it was an indie title published by Paradox Interactive, so I downloaded the demo not knowing what to expect.
I bought the game three days later, because it impressed me with it's originality and polish more than any game in years. Mount & Blade has the most fun, intense real-time combat I've ever tried.
In short, I think it's great.
If you're interested, it's at www.taleworlds.com.

I was interested in this game as well. However, I have been put off by negative reviews saying that other than the combat, there really isn't a whole lot to do in the giant open world. Is there a demo for it out?

wait, is this game an RPG or a first person medieval game, if its an RPG its the game I've been looking for, for the last few years, assuming it has no lame dungeon crawls and is just classic medieval sword fighting, world, quests, etc.

Don't get your hopes up. The RPG genre is essentially dead.

I'm loving the demo. The freedom of the game world is refreshing, and the graphics, while minimal, certainly get the job done. The only way this game could be better would be with decapitations. (ooh! someone should make a mod!)
Obviously not.

Doctor says Treatment is simple. Great clown Pagliacci is in town tonight. Go and see him. That should pick you up." Man bursts into tears. Says "But Doctor... I am Pagliacci."

Mount & Blade has solid RPG elements, although it's definitely combat-oriented. It's more RPG than Diablo, but less than Avernum.
It reminds me a little of Escape Velocity in the sense that there are multiple ways to make your fortune. You can trade goods from city to city, or enter and win tournaments, or complete various quests, or just go out and plunder.
Really though, the combat is amazingly fun. I managed to capture a city (Wercheg) for the first time last night, and my king added it to my domain as reward for my service.
Oh, and if you read the forum over at TaleWorlds.com, you'll see there are many, many mods.

Care to elaborate? Just saying "poor execution" doesn't really tell me much.
Personally, I think the execution is exceptionally good, and the concept is insufficient. If M&B had more emphasis on the role-playing elements, it could be an all-time classic. Unfortunately they were aiming mostly for a medieval combat simulator. Although that part is a spectacular success, there's a ton of under-utilized potential for story and depth of character. There are tantalizing hints, but they're never followed through.
