Ok with the whole PHR33 STOOFS RUSH(!) Crossover's webpage has been half shut down so I can't get any support from there.

So I install Steam and I get on, it works fine EXECPT it seems that flash isn't working and I can't download anything. I hope someone here can help me

So far Ive mainly had games which dont work, though I got Sins to work alright, but seeing as I play that for truly marathon sessions, I figure booting into windows for it isnt much of a hassle.

Strong Bad didnt work though, so Im waiting till tomorrow to get on the site.

I do have flash installed. Nothing happens when I click on download demo buttons and some others is what's happening, which probably has something to do with flash...

Guess we'll wait.

I don't think so: I do not have Flash installed in my Steam bottle and buying and downloading stuff works without problems.

Hm, wait a second: I just checked it and it indeed doesn't work. That's weird, since it definitely still worked a few weeks ago. I wonder if some of the more recent Steam updates broke something. I still don't think it's a Flash related problem, though. As I said: downloading and buying did work flawlessly not too long ago.

Relatively sure. I didn't change anything with CrossOver itself in the last time (no new version or something) while Steam installed two patches – and downloading worked before these patches. It's of course possible that CrossOver has to be updated to fix this, but the reason appears to be Steam.

Codeweavers' is up again and it seems I guessed right. There are a couple of threads in the compatibility database forum regarding that problem and here's one of the staff member's replies with a possible workaround:

In the meantime, the best workaround that we have at the moment is to install the Windows version of Firefox into the bottle with Steam. Then, use that Firefox to go to http://store.steampowered.com and buy your game in the browser. At the final step, when you confirm that you have Steam already installed, Firefox will pass a steam://... URL to Steam, and the purchase and download will complete.

What Steam games do you have? Remember, not everything works in CrossOver.

I've just tested my installed Steam games (at the moment only Portal and Civ IV) and both work fine. So I guess AMG's games just aren't supported in CrossOver.

I can confirm that this workaround seems to work, though I was a bit confused at first how to install Firefox into my bottle. Here's some quick directions:

Get the Firefox installer .exe from this page. Click on "Manage Bottles" on the window that appears when you start up CrossOver Games (or Configure: Manage Bottles). Click the bottle from the menu on the left (if you have more than one) and then click the "Install Software" button. Click "Install Unsupported Software, Continue, Continue, Choose Installer File, Install." When you're prompted to select a file, select the Firefox installer .exe.

But I still say "seems to work" because you seem to have to use CrossOver's "Force Installer to Quit" button (or something like that; can't recall the exact name of that button), and it seems to take Steam about five minutes to start up after you click a Steam link in Firefox… well better than nothing still.

EDIT: It also seems that clicking install links in Firefox won't work if Steam is currently running. You have to quit Steam, then click the link in Firefox and let it start Steam for you. That's kind of… ridiculous.

Maybe I should just get over it and install Windows and Boot Camp already.

EDIT 2: Nope, never mind. The "Connecting to Steam" window appeared for a while, but then it went away without the main Steam window ever appearing. Man, I'm so glad I didn't pay for this!

Hm, I think I'm starting to sound like a parrot repeating the same over and over, but also that works perfectly for me: I installed Firefox in my Steam bottle, started Firefox, surfed to steampowered.com and selected a couple of demos at random*. Each and every time, everything worked as it should.

Two questions for you, Pointage: 1. what version of CrossOver do you use? Pro or Games? I'm using Games for Steam. That shouldn't do much of a difference, but it's worth a try to attempt it with Games should you use Pro. 2. How long do you wait for Steam to start up? Steam sometimes takes a yotzload of time to launch (even under Windows, but it takes a bit longer in CrossOver), especially when you start it for the first time that day. Maybe you are just too impatient? Or maybe you just don't see Steam's window since it is hidden behind some other window.


* By the way, in case someone is interested: Oddworld runs great. Multiwinia does not.

Oh well, no huge tragedy. I doubt HL2 would run acceptably on this two-year-old MBP anyway… I just wanted to see if there was a glimmer of a chance. I'll still keep this around to test how sites I'm working on will look in IE.

Erm... I'm afraid this won't help you at all, but Half-Life and its derivatives actually run wonderfully on two-year-old MacBook Pros...

O RLY? At full resolution, even? (Blocky non-native-rez graphics on non-CRT monitors drive me nuts.) Then how come the Mac version of Prey ran at an almost, but not quite, entirely unacceptable framerate? I played it to completion anyway, but that made me swear off trying to run any other beefy games on this thing.
