Graphically great, aurally so-so, and gameplay-wise . . . well, there's a reason why people call it "Assassin's Creed 2." It is a modern day Assassin's Creed, albeit without the interesting story to give you something to look forward to. I'm sure you'll figure it out by the end (which is essentially where the devs give everyone the finger, and bow out).

The complains have been so bad, I haven't been able to bring myself to even start it. :-(
But Fallout 3 is almost finished downloading via Steam, so at least I have that to look forward to. :-)

Mission wise I could see it getting repetitive, most of it being the kill/blow up everything variety, but so far I'm not bored because killing and blowing up stuff is just so fun. As far as travel goes, I found I was able to get around quite quickly with the vehicles. I don't think there's any form of fast travel, so I suppose if you have to go from one side of the map to the other that could take awhile. But still to me that's part of the experience, just cruising or walking the landscape. Its beautiful enough to enjoy just doing that. On the console versions you can only save at safe houses, (which I can't stand, meaning the console style save system) but with the PC you can save anytime, so that's not an issue.
Ultimately its to each their own. I'm loving it, and I know I'll dig the rest of the game. I'm a huge FPS fan, and I've played tons of them, including as I said, Crysis, and Far Cry. I won't compare it to Crysis because that's a totally different setting, story, and in some ways, gameplay mechanic. Crysis is open, but only to a point. Its still linear-ish. FC2 is very open right from the get go. It has a vast sense of scale, and I think it captures a great feel of what Africa is, or could be. I've never been there of course, but what I'm saying is it has a good atmosphere.
I'm actually not sure if there is a demo, but if there is, or one comes out, snag that and see for yourself. I'd say you'd be doing yourself a disservice to just dismiss this based on what others may say about it.

NEVER quote Metacritic, unless you want people to think you're stupid.

Clearly, you haven't played many games. Far Cry 2's graphics are about average. Also, you're totally off on the performance thing--either because your idea of "flawlessly" is way off, or you're flat-out lying. On my MacBook Pro, you're looking at 1024x640 resolution (x600-series cards are fillrate limited) with most settings at medium (a couple of things, like textures, grass, fire, and tree effects, are fine on high). With those settings, you'll stick at 30-35 fps or above.

I'm getting similar FPS on my MB Pro at 1400x900. You're right though the graphics are average but nothing like Crysis. I do like the sunrises and sunsets though. I haven't played much- maybe 4 hours but so far not much plot. I know the ultimate goal is to kill the Jackal but how the hell are you supposed to find him? Maybe this will become more apparent as I get deeper into the game. I'm also getting bored with the travel and skirmishes in between specific missions but what I really hate is the malaria. It serves only as a distraction in the game IMHO.
I do like the weaponry and the methodology for acquiring and upgrading. One thing I don't understand about it though is that I had enough diamonds for a particular silent weapon but showed as locked and I was unable to buy it.
Anyway, I do like the game overall but I'm a FPS addict and I know that skews my opinion a great deal.

Also, any guesses on how it will run on my system? (see below)
"Heard joke once: Man goes to doctor. Says he's depressed. Says life seems harsh and cruel. Says he feels all alone in a threatening world where what lies ahead is vague and uncertain. Doctor says Treatment is simple. Great clown Pagliacci is in town tonight. Go and see him. That should pick you up." Man bursts into tears. Says "But Doctor... I am Pagliacci."

I can't speak from experience here, but a friend of mine (who's been rather disappointed with the game in nearly every aspect) mentioned that the multiplayer was practically worthless.
