Troubles with Vista SP1 installation Bootcamp 2.1 is installed

Well, I did that, and bootcamp update installed. However SP1 for Vista Home Premium still doesn't show up in the bloody Windows Update!!!
Since WU didn't work, I downloaded the FULL SP1 (500mb) file, and tried to run it. But, then it just died in typical microsoft fashion with an obscure error code, and a link to a page that has 'solutions' matching exactly what I did already which led me to the error help page in the first place! LOL... gotta love M$. It also claims some 'hard help manager' would be presented on next reboot in windows update. Lies.
So, well... foo. Since you can't install Vista + SP1 all in one go (integrated install), I am forced to rely on the Windows Update, which doesn't appear to work.
So close, yet so immensely far. Maybe I will trash bootcamp, and try XP... but since my XP is an original NON SP1-2 cd, I am gonna have to ... 'locate' one thats combined already in one install. Since you apparently cannot install XP, then use updaters to get to SP2 so you can install bootcamp, so you can then install SP3.
Why is this so difficult? Oh I know! Cause its WINDOWS!!!

Although this doesn't help you mostly likely, I'm pretty sure that new Vista DVDs come with SP1 already on there. Maaaaybe that would be a way for you to get where you want to be?

Try installing the latest NV driver from www.laptopvideo2go.com
make sure you get the 32 or 64 bit version, as relevant, and hopefully SP1 should recognise this as a valid driver.

I'll try the nvidia driver thing, but really that seems kind of stupid. This is on a apple hardware macbookpro that supports bootcamp, and if apple claims bootcamp works with vista sp1, then their bootcamp 2.1 software update should have taken care of the video drivers, just like it did with the broken realtek drivers.
Grr.

Uhm... what? Heh. Idiots.
That's what happens when Apple messes them up so much the stock nVidia drivers don't even recognize them. How's Windows supposed to tell they work?

You won't say what error you're getting, and WU like ASU is sometimes slightly senile, but you can integrate SP1 into a Vista disc if that helps. Vlite would be the easiest way. You might even have SP1 integrated already, if you want to check.

What, you think I didn't check to see what build I have installed?
I didn't bother to say what error# I'm getting because even on microsofts site they don't have specifics for it. They just lumped it into a generic "vista encountered a problem, try again" KB article.
Error:
An internal error occurred while installing the service pack.
Error code: 0x80070002. See http://go.microsoft..../?LinkId=101139 for details.
I'm going to try a different install.
BTW: I used laptopvideo2go, and installed the latest WHQL drivers, it did not help the SP1 issue, but it DID install on the laptop ok (uninstalling the prior apple-installed drivers though was a bitch. Even driver sweeper had issues trying to get rid of it haha).

VISTA SUCKS!
lol... going to try something different with an iso from a friend who slipstreamed SP1 into vista install. Should work with my key as its the same kind. Will update on how that goes.

I think Ill stick with XP until Windows 7 comes out, then get that instead. Should only be another year or so before its release. Although, going on Vista's delays, I imagine itll be more like 2.
Well, I only use it for gaming, so I can wait.
oh, BTW, hows the new HDD working out for you? I imagine its arrived by now and youve installed it?
If its not as quiet as I said it should be, then i apologise most sincerely, Ive only got the 7200...

The hassle I am having is that ... vista is a pain. Hah. I never had so many troubles with XP, I would install XP on bootcamp, but its XP proper (no SPs), and bootcamp wont accept anything less than SP2 for XP... refuses to even start up. So I need to 'acquire' another XP dvd + SP2 on it like I did with vista.

I too noticed the lessened access sounds on the 7200. I barely notice it, where as before I could tell things were going to slow down as soon as I heard the clickety-clack. But this is now practically no more! hurrah!
glad you approve.
So long as youve got a valid and legal serial number, I wouldnt care where you got your windows from. So I can quite happily recommend that you hunt down a t•rr•nt of windows which has been cut to shreds and only has the bare minimum. Theres plenty of these to be found, and many have different things cut out, which may hamper their use in certain ways.
Of course, as you have the XP disc already, you could create your own slipstreamed disc in Vista, thus ensuring that you have everything you need in there.

I just updated my bootcamp to Vista SP1 and I can't install bootcamp 2.1 drivers, which I'm pissed about. I didn't try doing 2.0 1st but that shouldn't be a problem. And just in case any one says to just use laptopvideo2go I won't. I did that about a month ago in XP and it didn't do a thing for fps in any game over the 2.1 drivers, according to fraps.

The reason to upgrade video drivers, is for compatibility with new games, and also to streamline and improve them. Most times a better video driver does not mean faster FPS in games you may be playing. However all of them are fixing some problems that existed in prior (and then introduce new ones). So upgrading is usually a good thing.
To a point.
On my XP rig, sticking with the 169 drivers is giving me less 'issues' in older games I have, than the new 178 drivers. However the 178 drivers run some 'newer' games I have MUCH better than the 169! So its a fricken juggle on what I want to play, and willing to accept in terms of speed/quality.
For Vista, I just wanted "it" to be happy and stfu about older unsupported drivers lol.
As for Bootcamp 2.1, those actually installed well. I did the "Download Only" and then was using the downloaded file to install from because I was re-installing windows vista so much, I was tired of re-downloading that 300mb file every time lol.
As for the Vista + SP1 a friend gave me. It worked! Sorta... after it got all installed, it rebooted itself out of the blue, and then the 'black screen' you see before windows starts, was filled with bootloader garbage and warnings and errors and all kinds of crap. After doing some googling, I found out my idiot firend had ALSO built in some sort of 'hack' for the windows authentication... which caused all that crap. SO, I dug around and found a "remover" tool that ripped out all the hacks, and fixed the MBR records, and all was fine then and authentication worked after that with my key and windows update.
After I dealt with that, I ran the bootcamp 2.1 installer, and that installed without any errors. So apparently you CAN install that even if you have already installed SP1. Kind of weird.
So, right now I have:
Vista Ultimate (Bloated) SP1 + Bootcamp 2.1 + Nvidia 178.26 + ALL Windows Updates
...
This thing took up 20gbs of disk space for the core OS. Guh... I think I'm gonna try to find a 'light' version lol.

itll let you get exactly what you want/need.
rip out all the excess languages and drivers you wont need, add in the boot camp drivers, 178.26 driver and all the windows updates and youll be set. youll have an easy to use backup should something go tits up, as it will hassle free install a 100% perfect and clean Vista which works right out the box thanks to the added drivers.
and to snake, the primary push for new drivers is new features (like PhysX support) and usable frame rates in the latest games. UT3, Crysis, Bioshock. All of them had a related driver release to give you a usable framrate. something boot camp's drivers dont give you.

Oh, how does one "rename" the partition the bootcamp uses for windows? It is this butt ugly drive icon on my desktop now named "untitled". Apple could have had the decency to auto-name it like "Vista" or "XP" or something... gawd. It wont let me rename through convention clicky/get info methods. I'd imagine its something with the mount point and using a unix command line setup, or editing some /etc file somewhere huh...

Just use vlite. Unless you're serious about wanting to use XP, in which case use nlite. I wouldn't use them to remove much of anything, though, except localizations, Windows Mail/Outlook Express, etc.

Seeing as youve got Ultimate, you can probably quite happily get rid of a lot of the nonsense theyve added in, such as Anti-Productivity Software (solitaire, even though its MS's crowning achievement), Outlook, localisations, all the drivers etc. etc.
Its an easy to use app, and takes you through it step by step.
And I agree about the renaming issue. Theres two ways around this. 1)install FUSE_3G and muck around so you can write to NTFS or 2) head into Windows and rename the C: drive to whatever you want.
Add a . to the front of it in order to hide it on the OSX desktop (though it will still appear in the sidebar if you want quick access, but you can remove it from there too should you never want to see it ever again).
Seeing as youre in windows, youre quite free to break OSX's file/folder naming rules and get away with it!?!?!
(this also works if you use your boot camp partition in parallels or VMWare, as they unmount the drive first)

I would like some way to WRITE to NTFS... many times I want to shuffle files from the mac side to the PC side (because I prefer doing ALL my web browsing/downloading with mac). However I ran into one of two problems:
• Windows doesn't see the mac side, so I can't copy FROM mac to windows.
• Mac wont write to ntfs, so I cant copy TO windows from mac.
Bootcamp also refuses you to self-partition (and choose one for windows), so I was unable to make up a third FAT partition that I could use as a shuttle partition. I'm going to have to use my external for that, but that means blowing away all backups on it (which I was gonna have to do anyway).
I guess first I will try the 'easy way' (maybe) and fuss with FUSE_3G.
