I have a 2006 Core2Duo iMac with a Radeon x1600 (with the extra ram, 256megs, baby!), running XPSP2 in Boot Camp.
So, installed the latest drivers from ATI, here: http://ati.amd.com/s...ootcamp-xp.html
But I get some games complaining that I don't have the supported drivers. Age of Conan kvetches but works fine; Warhammer AoR doesn't complain, but has some graphical issues and BSODs.
So I went to get the latest drivers. Ooh, look, they're up to 8.10! that's a ways past my 8.4 version they posted in January 2008.
http://game.amd.com/...p=xp/radeonx-xp
But it won't let me install 'em. My chipset is supported, but it refuses. I assume it's barfing 'cause it knows it's Mac hardware. Maybe Apple wants to certify the drivers before ATI releases them? maybe it's something else? I dunno.
It's frustrating, though. Anyone know of a sneaky workaround? I tried emailing ATI support, but got nothing.

I currently use the Omega drivers for all Radeon cards. Works like a charm, and it helped me defeat a bug in Assassins Creed.

Omega drivers, eh? interesting.
I tried to be a clever monkey and just install the drivers by force via the Device Manager. There were a hojillion possible ones in there, though, including a few with the same name ("Radeon x1600 Series"...sound promising, eh?). I tried the first one, and it wouldn't display. Had to reboot in safe mode and install the old drivers. Ah well...maybe I'll tinker with them some more another day.

I have the same sort of question, but with nvidia drivers. The ones apple supplies is a super insaely oldass version. And I was wondering if installing the new 178.24 work. I guess only one way to find out for nvidia hardware
install and break it!

You wont break it by installing display drivers. In an emergency, you have to boot in safe mode. Which means you have to hold a button to access that. F8 or something?

Which release of Omega drivers are you using? I'm using the ATI drivers on my MacBook Pro x1600, but they really suck. Lot's of incompatibilities. I've had crashing issues with the Omega drivers in the past, but I'm ready to try them again if they are any good.
Cheers!

My iMac's hard drive failed, so after they replaced it I reinstalled boot camp, got my XP2 slipstreamed disc installed on there, and tried the Mod Tool trick with the latest ATI drivers. By default, they installed the Mobility Radeon drivers. But as I've been assured that it's not a Mobility chip, I went in and added the 'Radeon x1600' driver (there were two listed; I chose the first one. Radeon x1600 -- not 'ATI Radeon', not the mobility driver, nothing but that). Now everything's working, like magic! phew, finally.
I'm not sure that I notice a huge difference, but at least the games aren't nagging me any more.
