So here's my story...
I deleted my XP partition since 5gb was too small and it would bog down too often.
So I've decided to start from scratch and with a new partition.
Well when I've tried to make a new partition it took over 12hrs and did nothing...
I"m using the OSX default tool, but is it just me but I remember it not taking anywhere near that long to make an 8GB partition...

what he said.

cancel the operation and go to disk utility and verify the disk. Ive found that almost every time you repartition your drive for boot camp, it "breaks" HDD. In that its still perfectly useable, but you need to repair it anyway to fix one or two low level joins which boot camp assistant didnt. In that instance you need to grab your 10.5 disk, boot from it and use disk utility on there to repair the disk.

Less often, you may need a third party disk repair/defragment utility like diskwarrior or TTP. Those apps use different algorithms to fix the drive, but shouldnt be necessary unless theres something actually wrong with the drive.

have fun, and let us know how it goes.

Thanks for the help guys.
I was wondering, "wth?" was going on. Problem is I left the OSX discs at home and am not going home for another couple of weeks at least. Not an emergency but would be nice to be able to boot back up into XP since I'd like to be able to work on my French class program.

hmmmm.
you could grab a trial of parallels or vmware fusion. they last 30 days or so, which should be plenty time to get the osx disks.

Ok I"m getting a strange error which says "No space left on device."
I have 13GB free and I"m only trying to make an 8GB partition.
I don't get it!

I have VM ware installed already. Can I not simply install XP there and then use bootcamp with it that way? I know they're 2 separate applications, or do I have to do both individually?

you can install xp there. But then its a virtual machine and not a separate partition. When you get to fixing boot camp, youll have to start afresh again.

To partion a 8GB volumes on the fly, without formatting the whole drive you need at least twice that free (16+GB).

Crap...
So much for that idea.
I'm not going to format just for this. I wish I wouldn't have messed with the partition originally. Grr...

And my sound driver/card is mysteriously dead...
Works via BT, but I don't want to listen to music via a BT adaptor...

Under OS X or Windows? In the first case I would advise to check the Sound preferences or the Settings in the Audio Midi Setup utility.

I have no sound at all. Either plugged in with my speakers or using the stock crappy macbook ones...
I checked under the OSX settings and it appears to be fine, but their's no sound at all.
I was only able to get some sound yesterday when I tried it via BT out of curiosity.

It's as if a wire or something mysteriously was unplugged.... I can even turn the volume up and down and nothing!
If it's not 1 thing, it's another....

this is going to sound incredibly dumb i know, but check the Sound preference pane to make sure that the output is set to the device you want. Happened to me once a month or three back.

1st thing I checked.
I've had the same problem in the past too!
This is crazy. In order to make another partition i have to reinstall the os?
This is almost as bad as running windows... lol

no you may just need to run Disk Utility from the OS Disc, though, so you can fully repair the drive.

are you able to get the OSX DVD emailed to you?

also, youve got a macbook, itll be incredibly easy to put a new HDD in there, and carbon copying across using CCC or SuperDuper gives you a clean break, lots more space, and the ability to repartition for windows because the drive is fine.
you can get a fairly spacious and fast drive for less than $100 these days. At least 160Gb, if not 250Gb, and even up to 7,200rpm.

SuperDuper does that too, and for free aswell.
But for the incremental updates thing, you have to pay etc. etc.

it doesnt really matter, almost 100% of the time they both work perfectly, so its just down to personal preference. I found SuperDupers customer support to be excellent, He got back to me several times during the same day about Time Machine and SuperDuper.

Somehow I don't think I can have 8GB fit in my email...
Well I got my sound back and can use XP via parallels so I'm not quite in a rush...
I'd rather not get a new HD since the 1 i have now works fine and would rather put it towards a new 22" monitor. They're like $200 nowadays! Even then... I'm still sort of cheap.. lol

fair play about the external monitor.
