MacBook Crashing Still... And I thought it was over...
#1
Posted 04 September 2008 - 07:16 PM
Anyways, looks like once again my MacBook is crashing a lot. I disconnected my PSX controller converter and it's just crashed 3 times in a matter of 10mins.
I have no clue what's going on, except that perhaps it's the mouse? But I've had this mouse for 5 years now.
Here is the crash log.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

So after about crashing another 3 times I decided to see if my XP partition was better and to see if it was a potential hardware issue.
So far, 15mins in XP and no issue. It makes me think it's an OSX issue.
Also it would crash roughly every 3mins even when not doing anything. I
I even unmounted my external hard drive to see if that was making it funky, but nothing. It still messed up.
Anyways, looking like I may have to format, too bad my OSX discs aren't with me.
Maybe it's just me, but it seems OSX 10.5 is not stable, but I don't remember having this many issues with my G5.
AH well, thanks in advance for any help.

Try running some serious hard disk utilities to check you OS X partition, like Disk Warrior or TechTools. I had similar problems a while ago and it turned out my hard disk was dying. The only reason why I could still boot into Windows without problems was that the defect was located in some sectors of the other partition.

Thanks,
is their any free program you can suggest?
I'm trying to repair permissions now to see if maybe that works.

Hm, there aren't that many really good free programs for that purpose on the Mac, unfortunately. AppleJack isn't bad, but doesn't do more than you could do with MacOS X's own programs. TechTool and DiskWarrior are capable of more things.
Just repairing permissions probably won't help that much. You could try booting from your system DVD and then repair the hard disk (the option on the side opposite to "Repair Permissions") with the Disk Utility.

yup, boot from the system DVD. And make sure to verify the disk again after an attempted repair. Something might have got through.
also, boot into safe mode (hold down shift till the apple comes up and then wait for ages). you wont have internet access etc. etc. but youll be able to check that all traces of USB overdrive are gone. Check the preference folders in the libraries, both on the root and in your home folder for "com.usboverdrive.driver.hid" (use list view, obviously).
check for an extension in the system folder (system>library>extensions>*****.kext)
and finally, any preferences files in both the libraries again.
good luck!

The bundle you want to remove is /System/Library/Extensions/USBOverdrive.kext. And send your panic logs to the developer.
Thanks!
Deleted and gone from the trash bin.
Hopefully this works for good now.
