I used to play this years ago and I've racked my brain trying to remember the title, but I can't. Each level starts out with you taking off from an aircraft carrier-like ship. The graphics are similar to Deimos Rising: 2D, but high-quality, like from a 90's arcade. The game is kind of old but I don't think was made before this decade. And it's either freeware or shareware and is X native.

Anyone have any idea what I'm talking about?

Sounds like Wingnuts, although that's not space-themed. It was commercial, but Freeverse lived up to their name and made it free, some time after Wingnuts 2 was released.

In Wingnuts you can control in which direction you fly though. This was Space Invaders style where you just go straight ahead, blasting everything in sight.

Gahhhh, I can't find it. *head explodes* :wall:

That's still more along the lines of Wingnuts.

Nope. This game was OS X compatible and I was familiar with the Rising series at the time (I remember it was my interest in Deimos that led me to this game).

Afraid not.

Darn. I've spent hours looking for this game. It must be somewhere.
