Should anyone had ever wondered what id's upcoming free online multiplayer shooter QuakeLive will look like, here's the answer.

uh... i didnt wonder at all, what with it being, you know, Quake 3...

one thing which I dont know the answer to is this. will people who own Quake 3 be able to play vs people on QuakeLive?

finally, I dont really see this gaining a huge audience simply because everyone has moved on from Q3. It was good, but is now largely antiquated. Quake 4 got criticised for having MP that was effectively Quake 3, why does free make that different all of a sudden?

Probably not. The matchmaking is working differently: QuakeLive does this with its new webpage based service.

Isn't it kinda, old? It looks like UT graphics. I guess for a browser-based game it's all right but still. I hope there are settings to up the quality.

uh, its quake three... simply a version of quake 3 which is ad supported, downloaded on demand and openable through your web browser.

thats it. nothing more nothing less than what you could already get.

shame it wont be compatible with the original. Id rather play the game natively than through a browser.

I know but there are plenty of games I play, based on the Q3 Engine and they don't look nearly as bad.

Pretty much what I expected. It's a classic, and will be fun to play on lower-end machines like my Air. (Which plays newer and better-looking Id Tech 3 games just great.) I could just play World of Padman or Tremulous, but Q3/QL is its own game with its own strengths, and will have a big player base I predict. I used to enjoy the Q3 demo.

well yeah, but all of those games were created after quake 3. Id dont want to re-do every asset in the game, they just want to release a classic game with very well crafted gameplay to the wild for free and support a long standing community.

And hats off to Id for doing that! Free is good. Setting it up was expensive and hosting servers is a long time financial commitment. I won't play, I don't like online games, but I recognize their coolness for offering it.

Hmm, it will still be better then Runescape or any of the other browser based 3d games.

I don't know about that--I've seen some VERY nice Unity-engine browser games! Try Velociraptor Safari for instance. (Not a shooter, of course.) I've also seen some really bad Shockwave 3D stuff

Another thing to remember about QL: it's in part an experiment with a new business model. As an experiment, Id may be hesitant (at least at first) to take talent off of other projects to make new assets for QL.

Unity is a very nice engine, efficient, graphically competent, well scaling etc. etc.
Also, QL doesnt actually run within the browser, its just opened through it. Its difficult to explain how this works, as I dont quite understand/know it either, but its not run within your browser window, just launched through it, and the community is based in it.

So, it just kind of goes full screen? Or do have to download something? Do we even know that this is Mac compatible?

It goes actually full screen, no download, and it will be Mac compatible. All confirmed, I'm just too lazy right now to look for the link.

well, of course you have to download something, but its streamed over your internet connection and then possibly cached, but not an up front downloader. given level size I cant see it being more than, say, 30Mb DL per level?

I wonder if it works in a way similar to Unity: Unity uses a web plugin, but that plugin does not require a browser restart. And it can run games full-screen. This works on Mac and Windows alike, all major browsers. So Quake Live might do something parallel to that.

If so, then there would be a download (the plugin) but only once, and a fairly painless installation. And if it's a plugin and not a separate app, then they might informally call that "nothing to download."

I'm really, really looking forward to this game after playing Quake 3 for the last couple of days. Has anyone gotten into beta? I've entered like 10 times but to no avail.

Just me, or do the graphics look significantly better than they did in the original game?

Donno, I just watched the game trailer and then fired up Quake III. I think the original looks better. The trailer made it look like the colors were washed out and they tried to saturate it to make up the difference. Sorta kinda.
