This sound so interesting. I'm sure we will see 10.5.3 benchs on BareFeats ;-)

Any driver improvements for Pro Apps on 8800GT?

I've heard that Apple SW engineers are upset with the 8800 GT's Pro App performance. Somebody goofed at some stage of development.

Hopefully this will translate into a priority to improve drivers to better support Core Image. But I'm not privy to the timetable. If I get a whiff of anything, I'll pass it on.

Whoa thanks for for the news tip Rob! I'll be buying a Mac Pro in the next month or two and I'm FAR FAR FAR more concerned with my Core Image performance (AKA Motion, FCP, After Effects) and was severely disappointed at the 8800.

Well I wonder if the driver situation will change on the 8800

I asked my source about price. The Radeon 3870 will likely be priced about 15% lower than the GeForce 8800.

Sigh. That's what I get for being an early adopter. Oh well, Crysis sure looks pretty.

It's going to be sold thru ATI online store, ATI dealers, and Apple Store.
If this is going to be sold at Apple Stores, do you think it may be a BTO option for new Mac Pros?

Why? The 8800GT is faster.

I might go for it cuz you can crossfire it with a 2nd in bootcamp, so it would spank the 8800 over on the windows side, but getting 2 of them would set you back about $480    according to robs estimated price

well, you can always pick up one now, and then get another in a years time when its cheaper...

or get a PC one and flash it.

on the whole though, for windows gaming, the 8800GT is a fair bit faster in practically all games.

no one has addressed my question yet:

since there will now be a ROM for the Radeon 3870-series that will boot OSX/EFI and Windows (from the new mac card), would it be possible to get a PC 3870X2, flash it with the new ROM, and have it:

function in OSX as a single 3870

and

function in Windows as a 3870X2?

if so, that seems like it may be an idea situation.  you get the improved performance in OSX of having a 3870, and in windows you get a 3870 X2

Why would you do that? your performance is better if you have two of them, and it ignores the crossfire stuff anyway?

But sadly, no clue. On another topic, HiS is going nuts: they are releasing new AGP (yes, AGP, not the newer kind) cards, the HD 3870s with their IceQ (fantastic) coolers.

because a 3870 X2 (in windows where both cores get used) is just as fast as a pair of 3870's in Crossfire mode and is cheaper, that's why.

And in OSX it will still function as a full-power 3870

that's why.

Maybe we should campaign with ATI to release a Mac OS X compatible 3870 X2. Then you would benefit from both cores under Mac OS X as well as Windows. Speed without the guilt.

Hmm, I'm about this close to ordering a refurb Mac Pro and just banking on buying the 3870.  :)

AfterEffects and Motion? 8 cores and 3870? Oh man...

After Effects isn't Core Image. So any speed gain by the 3870, doesn't apply to it.

They may of course fix the nVidia drivers at some point as well, at which point the point will be moot.
