Just a minor rant after too many afternoon rums:
Why is it that every time I boot into Windows (maybe every other day when I game a bit), 216 things seem to need to download into my OS and restart 6 times. Takes me 2 hours of time to get one hour of playing. OK, that's a bit of an exaggeration, but not by much. And any little change in a program, some minor update, seems to cause the whole edifice to malfunction and lose the ability to communicate with itself. I've begun to feel like any minor change I make is like pulling out the bottom domino in a quasi-balanced stack.
I'm developing a renewed love for the mac OS, I must say. And a kind of puzzled sympathy for Windows users.

huh? is it a Vista thing?? i dont see that in XP, and I dunno why it should be doing it like that. Im guessing that things maybe arent installing? in XP things wont install if you do the wrong shut down (ie restart or shut down, one of which wont install the updates)...

Vista-64 (Home premium OEM)
And I think it's doing what it's supposed to do, it's just that it's ALWAYS got something it needs to download, and so many of the required updates for drivers or basic programs seem to cause other programs to no longer work. I'm just not used to having to do so much maintenance work on my computer.

Vista gets updates more often than XP.
I'm annoyed by the same thing. I don't boot into Vista enough to get the updates as they come out, so when I finally want to spend some time playing a game, there are lots of updates that need to be download. Add to that the fact that Vista takes forever to shut down and start up, and it is a real annoyance. Some times it does take more than one restart because some of the patches need to be installed serially, or if you add in a graphics drivers update.

welcome to vista!!!
can you not turn it off or just ignore it till youve finished playing, thus letting it install on the way out?

a very logical approach, teflon, vitiated by my own damned obsessiveness--"oh, look, something needs updating--better do it now." Also by the fact that I'm usually playing until the last possible minute so stopping to do downloads will never work out. And despite the obvious issues with Vista, I'm just starting Crysis under Vista 64 with Direct X 10 and an 8800GT, so there are some rewards,.
