Hey, I just wanted to let you know that Apple released Boot Camp 2.1 today. It's basically a set of bug fixes, and as far as I can tell, does not provide any new functionality at all. However, it is "apparently" required to update Windows XP to the brand-new Service Pack 3 (I say that because I've been running the SP3 betas with no problems).

In any event, you can grab the installer from www.apple.com/support/downloads. Just pick the version of the installer that matches your OS. It might not be a bad idea to keep this executable on a flash drive in case you need to reinstall Windows at any time. I have all of my Windows installation junk on a spare drive (including the standalone SP3 installer), and it saves me a ton of time.

well its the first time that Vista 64 is supported via a download from Apple and not via a download from pirate bay of the drivers provided with 2008 revision macs.

out of interest, how often do you have to obliterate your windows install?

Probably a foolish question, but is this meant to be downloaded while under Windows, or in an OSX environment? 'Cause it doesn't come up under Software Update. And will it mess with a currently nicely functional BootCamp partition?

well, the download is a .exe file, so I assume its literally just a new set of drivers in a single package. makes sense considering that the boot camp repartitioning programme isnt broken and doesnt need any new functionality (well, aside from being able to dynamically resize would be quite nice), so why update it?

I typically do it every other month. However, when I'm testing hard drives, much more often.

Download it when you're on your Windows partition. The .exe should've given it away. It will mess with your partition: it'll reinstall your audio drivers (resetting your configuration in the process) and wipe out your custom video drivers (if you have any).

I'm still running boot camp beta. Smooth y'all. Didn't have to reinstall at all.

No thanks. I'll stick with what I've got. I just spent 2 days messing with video drivers and have no desire to start again.

its fairly simple to roll back the drivers in windows, you know.
I cant remember the exact procedure, but it requires only one more reboot and youre sorted.

Just a heads-up on this: a lot of folks (me included) are not having it show up on Apple software update (under Windows), and if downloading directly from the Apple site, it fails to install. There are a number of threads on this topic over on the Apple Discussions BootCamp forum. Apparently, you need version 2.02 (which doesn't come on the standard Leopard DVD, but did come on the Installer discs for the 2008 MacPro), otherwise the update is essentially not available.

You should be able to dig around in the executable and grab the drivers you need out of it.

Sorry, but I don't possess the knowledge or confidence to dig around in a Windows file for much of anything. Is there any way to get a download of 2.02?

I assume you're not referring to a problem under BootCamp 2.1? I don't think there is one, at least according to posts over at Apple Discussions.
As to the 8800GT under Windows, I've had no problems at all since I got the necessary drivers--referred to in this thread:8800GT breaks Windows video.

I'm using Vista 64, but the thread will give you links to drivers for any XP or Vista confiig.

Alright thanks I'll get those drivers, I'm running the 2.0 drivers right now. Since getting my Mac Pro on monday its been completely dead graphically on the windows side, robbing me of some my Battlefield 2 matches

Snake, haven't you tried the Laptopvideo2go drivers yet? They're far better than the crap that Apple ships with Bootcamp.

I haven't gotten the laptopvideo2go drivers yet because I currently don't have the internet configered in windows, can't find were to set the proxy settings. But I will download those drivers soon. The Bootcamp 2.1 drivers make the 8800 usuable in windows, dunno how good it works though. I might download fraps and do a 2.1 bootcamp test and then download the other drivers and post my results, this probably won't happen for a week though.

Don't you have a blank CD-R, flash drive, or iPod that you can dump the ~50 MB of data on to?

yes

but i found the internet connection part of internet explorer today so its all good to go. forgot to do any real benchmarks but I played battlefield 2 for a bit and it got 100 fps (which it is limited at) according to fraps with the bootcamp drivers. I'll do GRAW 2 for my benchmark on bootcamp vs laptopvideo cuz its my most graphics intensive game.
