Price isn't too bad, but how does it handle OSX upgrades?
Case isn't all that nice though.

either way, people will have to resort to the older sources of info on hacking OSX to work on non-macs if they want to be able to update... so why bother? why not source the parts yourself and do it all yourself?

or if you want a machine that runs OSX so bad, why not just buy a mac?

I see what you're trying to say, but you have to realize that we're talking about fixing a hardware deficit, whereas you're commenting on a software issue.

On a totally different note, it's amazing to note how Apple never learned from the clone wars--they got their butts handed to them then, and if they opened the market today, they'd have their butts handed to them again.

from my point of view, theres a single price point and market which Apple havent/wont tackle. The mini tower.
Aside from that, theyre good machines with the exception of graphics which tend to be on the slower side of things, but given that many of the chips around these days are older ATIs, which all sucked, or the 8600M which is only really bested by the 8800M which is a beast for a laptop to try and handle (the 8700M being a up clocked 8600M), I can half forgive them for that... They need to refresh the product lines more often on the GPU front.

but all of these things are only really a problem here on a gaming forum.. most people simply wont/dont care about the GPU.

I dont think Apple would do too badly in a more modern clone war. Specially not on the laptop front. Mini towers would probably kill the mac mini, eat into the iMac and take a fair chunk out of the Mac Pro, but the Apple brand is far far stronger these days (apple laptop sales are up, rest of industry down) compared to the near death it was facing in the 90s.

And what? Integral part of the Mac experience is the software. When you are not able to decently and safely run MacOS X on your computer, this is a completely futile exercise. Then you can fix all the hardware deficits you want, you end up with a useless piece of junk.

You don't realize how nice and stable Hackintoshes are. I've used quite a few; I just can't write about them.

Until the next bigger (or sometimes even smaller) system update that turns your hackintosh into the fastest and best equipped paperweight ever. And that's what I'm talking about.

just dont install the updates until theyve been modified then... its not too big an ask. After all, theres many a person who waits a few days after an update has been released to see if theres a major flaw with it.

on the whole though, I doubt that theres too many updates that are going to break things. Specially if youve got a mobo and GPU etc. etc. which is natively supported by the OS and not just kludged together.

Maybe not, but is this the whole point about using Macs or MacOS X? Relying on some dubious l33t hacker fixing things that are supposed to work? You could as well dump MacOS X then and use Linux.

And that's exactly the reason why I wouldn't do the hackintosh route.
But the price savings is pretty big when you consider things.

I'll probably just end up getting a Mac Mini next time around. Atleast you can upgrade the processor in them now.
