RPGDot has posted a new review of Avernum 5. The latest installment in the long running RPG series takes a new direction with the story, allowing players to explore as a group of soldiers from the above ground world of the Empire. RPGDot gave the game a score of 7.5 out of 10.

From the review:

In truth we’d still have written the game off as being an unwanted relic of a bygone era were it not for the fact that the descriptive writing and branching story is of the highest quality, drawing you into Spiderweb’s world of monsters and intrigue in spite of whatever reservations you might have. A limber brain muscle is definitely required to get the most out of it, though, if not for the strategic combat then for the visualisations, which require you to look past some very dated and bland environments.

Here’s something to think about: if Avernum 5 was created as a big budget game using the latest technology, then it would probably be hailed as an outstanding RPG for the masses; but then again, if it had been, would the story and gameplay have survived the development process intact? Who knows. All we can say is that this certainly ought to please hardcore RPG players and veteran nostalgists alike.
