Apple has announced that the recently released iPhone software development kit has been downloaded over one hundred thousand times. The announcement also offers some comments from company's planning to offer games and other software for the mobile device.

“Developer reaction to the iPhone SDK has been incredible with more than 100,000 downloads in the first four days,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “Also, over one million people have watched the launch video on Apple.com, further demonstrating the incredible interest developers have in creating applications for the iPhone.”

“We’re very excited about Apple’s new SDK and reaching every iPhone user through the new App Store,” said Scott Rubin, vice president, Sales and Marketing, Namco Networks. “We can’t wait to show off great new versions of arcade classics like PAC-MAN and Galaga that use the revolutionary features of the iPhone and iPod touch.”

“Apple’s become an important mobile game platform with the iPhone SDK,” said Jason Kapalka, co-founder and Chief Creative Officer, PopCap. “The new SDK gives us the tools to innovate and reinvent games like Bejeweled, Zuma and Peggle. With the new App Store we can reach every iPhone and iPod touch user on the planet.”

“The iPhone is the mobile platform game developers have been dreaming of,” said Scott Zerby, vice president, THQ Wireless. “We’re looking at how we can use the iPhone’s innovative user interface to create new game experiences for our big brand entertainment partners that consumers love.”

Yeah, but I'd guess something like 95,000 of those downloads were from people who have little or no idea what to do with it.  So don't expect 100,000 apps by June or anything.  ;)

and another thousand of those downloads were from people trying to hack iPhone 2.0 which they managed to do already, and the remaining 4 thousand are likely more like 2000 cos of corporate licensing and shizzle (i dont really know how it works, but im guessing that 100,000 downloads doesnt really entail 100,000 x $100)...

No one's paid their $99 yet as there is no place yet to pay it or download certifications/provisionings to begin full-scale work on the iPhone Developer site. I agree that there are many who simply downloaded it to play with it (it's missing the full Interface Builder GUI stuff for the iPhone yet) and start getting their feet wet with the extensive documentation etc and who will not be paying the $99 or $299 (enterprise) fee when they can. You didn't have to apply to the standard $99 to get the SDK, only to indicate you wanted to be certified and Apple is apparently reviewing the submissions now.

I also agree with Eric, there may not be 100,000 apps, sure. But easily 5,000, maybe even 10,000 I'm guessing. I alone will account for four.
