F.E.A.R and it's First Expansion. available together as a collectors edition DVD. The expansion is the game's reall ending. the new expansion is crap.

Halo 1.

Halflife 2, followed by all the episodes.

Uhhh. half life 2 story is bland in the end, of course, I don't have this on my personal experience, but it was told to me, and I believe it.

Well if you haven't played Half-Life 2, now is as good as time as any.... I'd say its the best single player to this date for a FPS, and sports the best AI buddy I've seen in a game. With Orange Box you get Half-Life 2, Episode 1 & 2, Portals and Team Fortress. I stand by Portal being the best game I've played in years.

Actually, what I meant was that though HL2 was actually good, and I'm sure it's episodes are too, the *story* isn't the best. The atmosphere is king, agreed.

And, there is a flash version of Portal.

Half-Life 1+2+expansions
Deus Ex (classic! also around for Mac, but hard to find, and doesn't run in OSX)
Deus Ex: Invisible War (not as deep gameplay-wise as the first, but still good in the story department. Get both on Steam for $20)
Bioshock (really good writing and acting)
Portal
Vampire: Bloodlines
Gears of War (story is crap, but good atmosphere, and fun to play)
Halo 1+2

Portal is ten pounds of awesome in a five pound bag. Pick up the HL1 anthology for $14.95 on Steam, and the Orange Box to get tons of HL goodness. (Or get the Valve complete pack for $99.95) HL's story is only bland if you can't take any subtlety whatsoever.

I tried out Project:Snowblind, since I heard it first got started as a multiplayer-based sequel to Deus Ex. It's similar in that it's got augmentations, but it's a straight-up shooter, and the story is weak.

I was playing HL2, and I just did not like it as good as the first. The first one had suspense, in the second one,  I feel like im just randomly killing with no story line, Im just running away from everything, tanks, people, missles,... maybe I did not get far enough but still.

I just finished playin the entire game of crysis, and its a very good game. You can sneak around and such.

bioshock story line is a little to crazy, with under water worlds and such, although the graphics are nice.

i played prey on the mac, that was a good game. nice story line

If you're looking for storyline, you can't go wrong with the Elder Scrolls games. Although hearing long-winded speeches about the rebirth of the the Dwemner champions in the War of the Second House and it's repercussions in the Mage's Guild of Cyrodil which united the warring factions of the Dark Brotherhood  (You get the idea) can get rather tiresome.

Doctor says Treatment is simple. Great clown Pagliacci is in town tonight. Go and see him. That should pick you up." Man bursts into tears. Says "But Doctor... I am Pagliacci."

...if you consider these games first-person shooters. ;)

Well, as long as you specialize in bows and magic, it can be a shooter. ;)

System Shock 1-2, Thief 1-3, Deus Ex 1, No One Lives Forever 1 (specifically the Game of the Year edition with the extra act) and 2, Max Payne 1-2, Unreal 1 and the expansion, Stalker, Hitman 1-4 (3 is a recap of some of 1-2, but misses a few levels), Call of Duty 1-4 (not 3, it's for consoles only, and sucks), FarCry, Ghost Recon and the two expansions, Rune, ...

There are a lot more, but some require a bit of ... empathy, and the rest take too long to list.

I'd go as far and call Hitman 4 the best in the series. Ever. Not level-wise, but gameplay relation to level wise. It just feels so balanced..

Did anyone mention Elite Force 1&2 already? Both are pretty well made and tell their plot quite good. Okay, EF1's ending is crap, but apart from that…

The only recent game I can think of is Bioshock. Deus Ex is quite good, but pretty old. The Mac version doesn't work in OS X, but if you can find the PC version somewhere, it is worth playing.

Soldier of Fortune II is a great shooter with a passable story line.  I like to pull out my knife and desecrate the dead while saying things like, "I catch you weeth my seestor!  I cut you!  I CUT YOU BAD!!!"  Bodies in SoF2 have sort of like a Red Faction GeoMod characteristic.  You can carve chunks off of them like a drunk Russian surgeon.

And if you live in a country that doesn't allow EULAs you can play it in OSX:
