First of all: is there someone I can buy it digitally? (ie. digital download?)

secondly: MP is still crossplatform, with intel & so on, right?

Thirdly: is it still possible to have a game form where one plays a marine or a predator, and have to hold out against hordes and hordes of AI aliens?

fourthly: does this play on a new MacBook? How well?

Fifthly: what about the expansion? is there one for mac? (or is it included?)

I'll answer one for you, there's no expansion (mods) other than the freeware mods that i've come across (and maps of course). I'm pretty sure there's no commercial expansions/mods.  Oh, and it works on MP now, there's a patch knocking about the net, but i've never tested it as I play BF1942 for my little mp gaming. It's at AppleCrypt Mods if you need it anyhow..

I think MP has been broken since the beginning... but I only played it in single player.. till I reached an unbeatable level and got fed up.

As for performance, I played it maxed up on an intel iMac with a X1600. So Rosetta is handling the game fairly well, so there is hope it will work fine with intel graphics.

The MP broke with the release of 10.3? I think? It worked at first - and was a lotta fun too. I liked playing on marine vs alien servers with the full alien life cycle enabled. I sold my copy once it became apparent they were never going to fix it.

The expansion never made it to Mac.

I'd love to play SOME kind of AvP again. I own AVP1 and I think it has an OS X patch--I should try it.

Could you do this at one point? I don't remember it, which is not saying much. I don't remember AvP2 multiplayer being all that wonderful either. I have no idea about the other questions.

Send me an email and we can discuss a purchase if you want it bad. ;)

I suggest melding this thread with the one I made "AVP2 questions". *holds on* (or there was another one that was stickied)

There was such a mode in AVP1. But I'm still considering, since the AVP2 expansion didnt come, and other various things..

And maybe AVP1 Gold would be better on MacBooks, since it would defenitely run, and it would be cool marine vs aliens action.. But the graphics are horribly outdated.. Although AvP2 wasnt much of a looker either.. argh. I cant decide.

Bootcamp + avp2 + expansion vs os x + regular avp2 for MPing? a lot of my friends have regular macbooks, so getting a lan party would be "somewhat" easy. They also play shooters, so I thought it would be fun to go for a "marine vs predator" or "marine vs lone alien" kind of thing..

I played AvP1 today.. finally give the Alien Missions a try... pretty fun.

I confirm that AvP1 runs with a high fps on an intel iMac X1600. It did crash on me a few times, but not during gameplay, and anyway the game launches so fast, that in a matter of seconds you are back in the action.

What's more, the graphics are fairly good. I think they look way better than AvP2. That custom engine was just perfect for AvP, and the Alien model looks realistic enough.

And still, aaaah, the sounds effects are amazing... pure blessing...

In conclusion, AvP is still a great game and it still runs well on today macs !! That's quite an accomplishment !

OK, another question: AVP Gold + mods? I was a huge AVP player back when it was new (well, ok, it wasnt that new anymore) for PC, and it had heaps and heaps of hi-res texture mods. (and btw, I LOVED the sounds. I used to have a 4.1 surround system, and I heard predator growls behind me, in front of me, stuff like that, really great!)

You think they work on the mac version? or are there mac versions? (admittedly, I havent looked yet.)

Oh and another question: AVP Gold mac vs AVP Gold winxp? do they mingle multiplayerly? (not that it matters, it would be a mac only fest anyway..)

RUNDOWN OF MY QUESTIONS: (with (?)s for still open questions)

1. AVP2 multiplayer = should be fixed for intel, but maybe not for leopard (?)

2. AVP2 crossplatform mp = should work, but if the above exists, maybe it doesn't (?)

3. AVP2 expansion = never happened

4. AVP2 on a regular macbook (?)

5. AVP Gold = works on OS X

6. AVP2 hold out mode like in AVP Gold = doesn't exist, one more reason to get AVPG instead of AVP2 (AVPG as opposed to AVP2 expansion even had that funny predator shotgun thing AND the akimbo pistols)

7. AVPG existing mods = working on OS X (?)

As an AVP Gold owner, I will have to dig it out and install! Classic game.

Maybe we should get together, internetally. And scare the living crap out of each other. But back to the questions..^

I just found out that AVPs source code was released to the public.. is it for free now..?

And what about that OSX patch? where is it?

Having a games source code released doesn't automatically make the game assets free. Even old games such as Wolfenstein 3D... that is unless the publisher liberates the game like bungee did with marathon. I doubt that happened with AVP.

No! Not my dog!

So I got AVPG. It is still funny. It just needs some high res textures.. only I cant find them anymore! (not that I'd know if I'd get them to work in osx anyway.. sigh)
