Following Apple's release of the new Mac Pro on Tuesday, Apple has added the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT for purchase as a stand-alone card.

From Apple's online store:

For advanced graphics performance, choose the latest-generation NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT with 512MB of GDDR3 video memory. With a unified shader core and massive memory bandwidth, the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT brings advanced performance to graphics-intensive applications like motion graphics, 3D modeling, rendering, and animation. It features a PCI Express 2.0 interface for a high-bandwidth connection to the Mac Pro and two dual-link DVI ports for connecting up to two 30-inch Apple Cinema HD Displays.
Apple posted a benchmark between their "previous standard", the NVIDIA 7300 GT against their new NVIDIA 8800 GT running a time demo for Doom 3. The 7300 scored 64 frames-per-second while the 8800 GT scored 141.

Follow the links below to take you to the Apple Mac Pro information page as well as the U.S. online store to learn more. Current price is $349 in both the U.S. and Canadian stores (however there is a wait time of 5 to 7 weeks).

Twice as good, but it won't work in a previous-gen Mac Pro. You'd think that might be something to mention in the news article...

I was hesitent to post any news regarding this matter until I heard from the horse's mouth (Apple) or from a reliable source.

I brought up this matter in a separate news article "Mac Pro Buying Advice - 2600 XT VS. 8800 GT" (revealed by Rob-Art from Barefeats), however it was not until later that I found the article in which  it was confirmed by Apple (Tech Bulletin) which I will post to IMG within the next day to ensure any prospective buyers have a reliable reference.
