Disney Online has announced that Pirates of the Caribbean Online, an immersive massively multiplayer online game and virtual world inspired by the popular film franchise, has launched for the PC and Mac platforms. Pirates of the Caribbean Online allows thousands of players to experience the adventures made famous in the films and explore beyond these boundaries in a quest to become the most legendary pirate on the high seas.

“The launch of Pirates of the Caribbean Online opens up an entirely new world of pirate adventures to thousands of fans who can now play alongside their favorite characters in a fully-immersive environment that builds on and goes beyond the epic stories created in the films,” said Paul Yanover, Executive Vice President and Managing Director, Disney Online. "We believe the game’s focus on action and adventure, combined with many customization options will appeal to a broad audience of both gamers and fans of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise as they set out on their own course to live the legend.”

In Pirates of the Caribbean Online, players create and customize their own pirate, captain their own ship, and assemble a crew of their fellow rogues in an effort to become the Caribbean’s most legendary Pirate. Along the way, players will interact with characters made popular by the films, like Jack Sparrow, Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann, and will also encounter a host of new characters and enemies unique to the game. To become the most notorious pirate, players must forge alliances, hunt for buried treasure, battle evil undead forces, and use cunning and strategy to outwit their foes.
Pirates of the Caribbean Online is rated E10+ and requires OS X 10.4.6, a G4 or Intel processor, 512MB RAM, 700MB hard disk space, and a broadband internet connection.

A portion of the game is available for free and players can get unlimited access for a monthly subscription fee. At launch, Disney Online is offering new players subscriptions to Unlimited Access for a first-month fee of $4.95 and a $9.95 fee for following months.

Players can download the game directly and access additional information at the game’s web site.

Well, I kinda like it.  I was so happy they had a Mac version.  It's still a little buggy and choppy, though.  The gameplay isn't as polished or complex as "the biggies", FFXI and WoW, but it has been enjoyable so far.

It's great to hear the movies' major stars doing their characters' voices, and the quests can be fun.  Being able to "drive a boat" with a crew of other players on board operating the deck cannons, and boarding Navy & merchant ships for melee, is pretty wild.  Sword & gun come quickly.  Voodoo dolls take a while longer.  I haven't gotten very far on the "main quest" (as far as I know), getting Captain Jack the Black Pearl.  And haven't yet tried other games such as treasure map, playing poker, pvp (pirate vs pirate), etc.

And it's downloadable and free to play at the lower levels.

(oh, btw: I've got no connection with Disney or the game, other than being a happy beta tester.)

I'm still playing EQMac so it does look OK.  But not anywhere as smooth as Wow, although I'm betting it will tire me pretty quickly like Wow.

my download stalled a couple of times, and with no cancel button, i had to quite the program. but after a few runs the game got downloaded and all was well.

hopefully this game can give me a pirate fix. i had my hopes pined on Pirates of the Burning Sea, but no matter how hard I try, I just find it boring (other than the outfits).

I tried it yesterday and well, the graphics are... meh, though they spent a lot of time
getting the heads right.(I doubt btw that they used the original actors voices)
Very non-aliased which bugs me visually. Buggy as mentioned before like my cursor
keeps disappearing, and just when you think you're getting into it, !WHAMMO! one big
giant advertisement drops on my head, I'm dead, back to jail and I was out of there.
5+ for the effort from me.

The game is intriguing, but the game experience isn't all there

instead of downloading the game world and have it saved to your hard drive, it streams everything when you want to load a certain zone. So far, I've been doing a lot of waiting and little playing.

I can't say much for the interface, since it is seriously lacking. I can't get to the main menu (is there a main menu?!) to adjust the graphics options, and it is hard to "look" with the mouse in game (tho that may be due to the graphics settings). I do like the wasd key configuration.

I can't say all that much about the game since I haven't gotten into the guts of the game. I am still downloading the update!

The game has been patched frequently since launch.

I've never played it (I've only run it once a week for a few minutes to check it after each patch) but I will do in the next few days ... because I have to rewiew it :(

It's still very ugly to see and the framerate isn't all that steady for an engine this poor ... but the newbies area seems pretty crowded indeed. Is anyone playing it? Can you share your thoughts?
