Blizzplanet has noted that Blizzard Entertainment's recently updated Job Openings page lists several positions for a Top Secret game project. Two of the openings are for work on a "Next Gen MMO" title. Blizzard has yet to reveal any specifics about the game or games in progress.

Some jobs tagged as "Top Secret" refer to a Next-Gen MMO. Another job requires knowledge of Game Physics/Collision programming for a Next-Gen MMO and familiarity with Havok, Ageia, and O.D.E. physics packages. Same technology used by Starcraft II, and other recent non-Blizzard games.
Blizzard also recently released a new Fansite Kit for the ever popular World of Warcraft's next expansion, Wrath of the Lich King. The kit includes everything web designers might need to get their own Lich King site up and running.

We are pleased to announce that our new fansite kit is available for download. This kit should provide you with some basic assets to create a cool Wrath of the Lich King fansite. In it, you'll find...

- Concept art for Wrath of the Lich King
- Wrath of the Lich King avatar pictures
- Sample HTML to help you with your page layout
- Logos for Wrath of the Lich King, Blizzard, and Battle.net
- Wallpapers
- Wrath of the Lich King fact sheet and FAQ
- A sample Wrath of the Lich King article
- Graphics source files to help you with your own designs

WOW2? Nah, 9 million users, 2 expansion packs and going strong..

Starcraft MMO? Nah, already got Starcraft 2 comming, and it wont be out in at least a year..

Diablo MMO? Last option... Would be pretty neat, but would it be special enough to draw people away from WOW?

New game concept *Gasp* MMO? O_O

And now, time for some Legend of Zelda.

I guess MMO-whatevers are such a cash cow for their makers that we're stuck with 'em forever.  Sigh.

I don't know about Starcraft.  Warcraft III came out in 2002, the expansion in 2003 and WoW in 2004.

I agree about a Diablo MMO.  Too similar (swords and sorcery) to WoW.

That leaves Westerns and post-apocalyptic mutants.  Or maybe post-apocalyptic mutants terrorizing the old West.

Diablo MMO - Doubtful. As some have pointed out, it's too similar to Warcraft. The reason Diablo worked before was because it was a different genre, where as Diablo was RPG, Warcraft was RTS.

WoW2 - Again, doubtful. WoW has millions of PAYING customers who have invested great amount of time, effort and money into the game. To ask them to abandon their characters and move on to a new "version" would be too much. If Blizzard offered current players to somehow move their characters to the new WoW it would just mean WoW2 won't be too different and therefore pointless. WoW has been doing well with expansion packs and I don't see the WoW engine needing to be replaced for another 5+ years.

World of Starcraft - This is the most likely candidate. Since SC2 will be released in about a year, WoS would probably be released about 1 - 1.5 years afterwards, which would mean a projected release date of 2010, give or take a year or two. The Starcraft universe would be different enough from the Warcraft universe to attract new players and some current WoW players who would play both games, like myself.

WoW is a Diablo MMO (in a Warcraft setting). Which is kind of weird, because the Warcraft setting would work with a lot more of a PvP focus, while a PvE focus makes more sense for Diablo.

Hey, as long as the income allows them (developers) to design true strategy games here and there, I'm all for it.
