Regarding AvP2: I'm running a MacPro with fully updated Tiger (10.4.11); the software works fine. Last night I installed Leopard 10.5.2 on a second drive, ported my 10.4 install to Leopard, and encountered the usual freeze-up upon trying to run the game.

The game freezes after the first splash screen (MacPlay), before the second appears (AvP2). After that come several AVI movies (Fox, Lithtec, etc) that can be bypassed in Tiger by renaming / deleting the MOVIE folder inside the DATA folder. Renaming this folder did not fix the crash problem in Leopard - I'd been hoping  the problem was simply with the AVIs.

I also tried setting preferences on my saved game so that double-clicking on it directly started AVP2 - worked in Tiger, but again, same freeze in Leopard.

Burning a CD with the same name as CD1 (Aliens vs. Predator 2) but only an MP3 on it resulted in a "please insert the AVP2 CD" screen.

Trying to start with CD2 in the drive makes the game ask for CD1.

More random hackery to come.

Please keep us apprised; this is one of my favorite games when it works.

I have been trying similar things trying to get NOLF2, SOF2 and Elite Force 1 (single player) to run. With SOF2 the game first appears to run but then "Omni crash catcher" crashes on exit! I tried replacing it with a later version to no avail. I gave up on Elite Force when I got kernel panics in the menu screen. It is shame more of these old games aren't set free by the developers for folks to update when new systems arrive.

That's an OS or hardware problem right there. Did you run the hardware test CD or file a bug report with Apple?

I sent in the crash report but I don't have a developer account to submit a bug report. I'm confident it isn't hardware I have done much more intensive stuff that uses all my processor resources and available RAM without issue. I could replicate the issue by doing exactly the same again after a reboot.

I had smp set to 0 in the config file as well as I read this caused issues in the past. I am on a G5 2.5GHz Dual with X800XT and 2.5GB of RAM, running 10.5.2.

Here is the report:

Well I had tested a lot of games myself on a Mac Pro with both Leopard and Tiger.  I created a Filemaker App that lists every game that I could find that works well with Leopard.  So far I only have 161 on the list out of 640 or so.  I will only list the ones that are big for the most part that I think people would want to know about:

There are many more on a Filemaker list that I might put online for people to access but just thought I would throw this up for now.  Hope this helps.

Ran on Mac Pro Quad 2.66
4gb of RAM
20" Cinema display
ATI x1900 512 video card

Almost all games that are UB or have a UB patch should play on 10.5 and if not, check for patches. Just listing some off memory that I know did or did not work.  Also I will list the pages where patches are found for these games to the latest version except for Ghost Recon.  Goto Aspyr home page and you will find that one heh.

Games I was able to verify play on 10.5

Age Of Empires 2 Gold Edition - http://www.destineer...pport/aoe2.html
Age of Empires III - http://www.apple.com...empiresiii.html

Some of these issues above are more Rosetta issues than Leopard problems, Stubbs and SoF II for instance. Compare our Rosetta and Games thread for that.

I can confirm that both Fallout and Fallout 2 work fine.

Unfortunately, I just got the latest Macbook Pro (with the new Multi-touch Trackpad) and Fallout 2 doesn't work. The new MBP comes with a new processor, and I think the architecture is screwy. So I don't think that it's Leopard necessarily. But it certainly is not working! As soon as you're past the splash screen, the graphics get corrupted (all pushed to the the left half of the screen, squished, in a low colour palate and unreadable). Just so people know.

Sounds like GPU driver problems... Not the architecture of the processor.

Well, that may well be. I'm not an expert on the inner workings of programs and programming. All the same, the end result is that for the new Macbook Pros, Fallout 2 doesn't load. Or, at least it doesn't for me . . . and I'm extrapolating that it would be the same for all MacbookPro4.1 users. Anyone have any ideas about working around this issue?

Strangely, I had this bug under MacOS X 10.4 – and it hasn't occurred for me since updating to Leopard. But I have to say that I haven't played the game too often since upgrading. But I found back then that adjusting the camera position (rotating or zooming) stopped the spinning.

Just wanted to throw in a quick note that I fired up Oni again using the Mac OS X 1.0 version 1.36 patch and the gameplay works fine on  Leopard.  There is a black screen that sometimes shows, but can be bypassed with a keypress to display the game's menu.

Hmmmm I have the exact same problems. I had a late 07 Macbook Pro and Fallout 1 & 2 ran perfectly on it. But when I did the upgrade to the newest Macbook Pro line (Multitouch pad, 2x Graphics Memory, etc) the colors are all inverted and the game screen is split in half.

If anyone can solve this I would love you for all eternity and perhaps even dance at your next wedding. :D

I have VMWare Fusion, and I can run both Fallouts through that, however the screen is a very tiny window and that is annoying. And I got both to run in Crossover Games, but they are both very slow and plus I have to pay for that software :P

So again, for my eternal gratitude, tell me how to fix this  hahaha

I think even VMware has a fullscreen mode. ;)

It's been a while since I tried VMware, but wasn't there somewhere an option to let it change the resolution in full-screen mode? I know Parallels has something like that.

I think we are misunderstanding each other lol  See I have Windows XP Pro SP2 on my VMWare Fusion. I also have it in fullscreen mode, so that the entire Mac Desktop Space is XP. Resolution in Windows is set to 1440x900. Any higher and the Windows desktop exceeds my display. When I launch either of the fallout games while in Fullscreen mode, the entire screen goes black, and a very small "window" inside the black borders contain the game being played. I have downloaded patches and everything, tried to resize the game through patches, no luck.

This is why I was REALLY hoping some genius could figure out how to let me run it natively in Leopard again lol

No, no, I think we understand each other quite right. The problem is that VMware (or Parallels) can go to fullscreen and allow resolution switching by the Windows software or go to fullscreen and do not allow resolution switching by the Windows programs. What you see seems to be the latter: VMware goes to fullscreen, but does not allow Fallout to switch to its desired resolution. Result: a tiny window (I think Fallout 1 & 2 run in 800x600 or so) on a huge screen with 1440x900 pixels. I seriously believe that hidden somewhere in VMware preferences should be an option to allow the Windows programs to switch the resolution in fullscreen mode. Maybe it's in the options of VMware's Windows tools, but it should be somewhere.

However: Fallout 2 natively under Leopard would indeed be the best solution.  ;)

I'd rather have Fallout 3 natively under Leopard, to be completely useless to this discussion here :D

Oh and by the way, AVP Gold works. Like a charm.
