Guitar Hero is a computer model of playing a guitar in a band

That's too broad. By that logic, the Tony Hawk games also belong in the Simulator forum as well.

Donkey Konga simulates playing bongos.. in the jungle, as a giant ape. Does it belong in the category Simulators? I say not. Yet the gameplay and goals are similar to Guitar Hero.

I think what would help here is rather than us argue about which games are simulators, let's find a good definition of them and then apply it uniformly. There will always be some edge cases that give somebody fits, but at least we'll be consistent and people will be able to find stuff.

Wikipedia has a long article on the topic of simulations. I was struck by this statement:

Quote

A computer simulation is an attempt to model a real-life or hypothetical situation on a computer so that it can be studied to see how the system works. By changing variables, predictions may be made about the behaviour of the system.
I think that's exactly what's missing from Guitar Hero. The goal of the game isn't to study how the system works and experiment with the variables.

So I think what we have been arguing about is simulation versus simulator. Many games these days contain some simulation, but their purpose is not to be a simulator. "Simulation" is therefore not a very useful way to partition the forum. "Simulator" is useful.
Happily, the forum is named "Mac Simulators". Just about the only thing wrong with it is that it contains some posts about Guitar Hero.  :)

Just to toot my own horn a bit I did sort of guess Guitar Hero as the new game that Aspyr might be bringing. ;)

How is Aspyr going to handle the whole controller issue? I don't want to have pay for a new controller when i already own a PS2 one. they should sell 2 copies. The guitar bundle then a standalone game that comes with a big USB to PS2 extension cable(to prevent macbook woopsies!).

It's a little hard to classify, but if I were looking for discussion of this game, I wouldn't think to look in "simulators".  I'd probably look in the "puzzle/board/arcade/card" forum first.  Which, BTW, should probably be renamed to "casual games", and then use puzzle etc. as examples.

I would have classified it in "Guitar Games", but the sub-forum is missing

How about: wireless controllers. The PS3 ones are wireless already, they could either make them compatible to mac/PC, or release new ones that run on bluetooth or wlan.

All mac's that will be able to run this game come with built in bluetooth. why do we have to settle with a corded controller when the other platforms get wireless out of the box. also with the argument that barely any PC's have bluetooth, how hard would it be to make a controller using a wireless USB reciever for the controller.

They already make them, that's what they're shipping for XBox360 and PS3. It's pretty stupid that Activision ships a wireless dongle for PS3 despite the PS3 having bluetooth, but that kind of stupidity is a step up from only shipping wired controllers with no option for being cool, having friends, and tearing it up like a wireless guitar provides.

I believe that's a mistake.  Glenda said in a previous interview that the game ships with a wired USB guitar.  That's what we're selling in the PC package currently.

It also says: "Guitar Hero X-Plorer wireless guitar controller", and I don't know how someone could typo that. It's also got a four star review already! Boy, Apple's web store is sure well-run. Honest people, low prices, that's the Apple way.

that it does, but that could simply be because someone at apple isnt clever enough to distinguish between a console version of the game and a PC version of the game. The consoles come with wireless, while the PC comes wired.

from the amazon PC version page:
"Dude, where's my wire? - Wireless guitars on the Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii will have the Gibson Les Paul guitar shape."

easy to misread

from wikipedia:

The PC and Mac versions of the game are expected to ship bundled together on November 12, slightly after the release of the console versions, and will include the same USB-based Gibson X-Plorer guitar controller included with the Xbox 360 version of Guitar Hero II. However, Windows users with the Xbox 360 Wireless Gaming Receiver for Windows will be able to use the Xbox 360 Gibson Les Paul wireless guitar controller as well, though this is not supported by Aspyr Media.

and finally the fact that the PC version already released comes with the afore mentioned guitar, and the MGS makes no mention of wireless, has the same picture, and it looks like the gibson x-plorer
