A few days ago I've submitted Warzone 2100 Resurrection to MGF:

http://macgamefiles.....php?item=19639

(the official site is: http://wz2100.net/).

I'm not involved in its development but I was wondering why I couldn't find any info on my preferred Mac gaming websites ...

Here's the author's description:

Quote

Warzone 2100 is a real-time strategy game, developed by Pumpkin Studios and published by Eidos-Interactive™.

Although comparable to Earth2150™ in many significant aspects, it does contain some that are unique. These include various radar technologies, a greater focus on artillery and counter-battery technologies, more frequent in-game cinematic updates as gameplay progress, as well as a different vehicle design method. It was released in 1999 for both PC and Playstation®.

In late 2004 Warzone was released by its copyright holders, Eidos-Interactive™, to the public under the GNU General Public License (GPL) (minus the FMVs), and the Warzone 2100 Resurrection Project was born.

The Warzone 2100 Ressurrection Project aims to continue the vision of Pumpkin studios started in 1999 with the game Warzone 2100, Which was closed source until Dec 6, 2004 when it was let out the doors for the first time under a GPL license.

This game is interesting because it was contemporary and pretty similar to Earth 2150, an awaited RTS that Epic-Interactive (now Rune-Soft) wasn't able to port to our platform at that time (I remember that they ended their efforts of porting it in 2003) ...

The 3d engine is rather outdated but does its job pretty well and the game should run on every Mac that can handle Tiger. I've only played Warzone 2100 for a few hours but it seems to me that it strenghts are: the technology tree, the customizable behaviour of the units, the spectacular action during the battles ...

What's your opinion?

PS
Oh, if you want to play this game at wide resolutions (1680x1050, for example), open the config initialization file that it stores in the user/library/application support/warzone 2100 folder and modify the following parameters:

width=
height=

If you want to switch from full screen to windowed just enter "0" or "1" here:

fullscreen=

Very cool...I remember reading about this quite a while ago, but a Mac version didn't seem to be getting anywhere at the time and I forgot about it. Downloading now....

Well, that's pretty nice! I played Earth 2140 and it was OK, not great, but I haven't played Earth 2150. This seems to have a pretty good feel considering its age. Shame about the missing movies, though...apparently they couldn't even include the player, so scrounging up a copy via eBay or whatever wouldn't do any good.

Is this a standalone download or do I need the original PC data files for Earth 2150 to play it?

It's a standalone download, and even if you had data files for Earth 2150, it would do you no good at all, since this isn't Earth 2150. :) It's Warzone 2100, which is a different game. It's just similar because it's a futuristic RTS game.

aaaaah!!!! the clunky clunky mouse controls!

seriously, even way back when im sure that 2 button mice were common and most people took cues from warcraft as opposed to C&C...

aside from that, seems pretty neat.
Polytetrafluoroethylene to my friends.

Macbook Pro - C2D 2.4Ghz / 4Gb RAM / WD Scorpio Black 320GB ( 255GB OSX v 42GB XP ) / Geforce 8600M GT 256Mb / 15.4"
Cube - G4 1.7Ghz 7448 / 1.5Gb RAM / Samsung Spinpoint 250GB / Geforce 6200 256Mb

We won! Apple offer the 17" with a matte screen! Well... at a price...

Yeah, I noticed, but for some reason it doesn't bother me as much as I thought it would.

Holy Crap. This is awesome. It's like a flashback to my days on C&C and TA - the units are almost TA-like, and the game announcer's voice reminds me so much of my EVA from C&C...I can't believe this is a standalone freeware game. And it's only 40 MB?!

The movies + CD music fill up the rest of the CD, presumably, if you had the original game. It would be kind of nice if more companies released their old games like this some time after they've stopped selling. (And nicer yet if they released the entire thing, and didn't hold back movies and stuff like in this case.)

Yes, though admittedly, it's not entirely withing the original company's control. I still wish we could get working sound and cutscenes in the Mac port of HomeWorld 1. :(

This isn't the open-source version of Earth 2150, it's only contemporary and similar gameplay-wise.

This is the Original Warzone 2100 by EIDOS that the publisher has relesead under the GPL (without some copyright-protected contents like FMV, soundtrack etc).

The team has reworked the code and is creating some new content to replace the copyright stuff ...

Yes, the mouse controls are terrible ... I have to use both the numeric pad and the mouse to control the camera ...

Sadly, while it'll run on my MacBook Pro, it won't run on my G3 iBook. Does this need a G4? Honestly, I don't see why it would need one, after all, it's a game from 1999...

I was wondering if a G3 Mac would run this game as there are no specific hardware requirements for it (the team simply says "a Mac with Tiger").

But ... it is very unusual that the developers of the current open-source projects spend their time testing low-end Mac hardware. G3 Macs are getting really old now ... I think we're lucky to have a working Mac build of this game aren't we?

You should try to post a request in the official message board:

I remember playing WZ2100 back when it was released.. or a demo at least. I liked it, but it had some issues..

Anyway Earth 2150 was fantastic. The campaign was really well handled and it kept me going for a long time. Earth 2160 on the other hand copped out a bit and didn't do so well. But then again, I still need to play through it, and play skirmish again... and it had the voice of Bruce Willis, atleast in german!

It looks like a new version will be released soon and now they can legally include the movies too. I stumbled upon it accidentally at SourceForge and the current version plays great-for-a-beta. 2.1b2 is the latest compiled Mac version, I think.

And precisely one year later, version 2.2.1 (with the movies) is released for OS X.
