you can get some demos via steam, yes, but thats down to the publisher/developer's discretion.
ill be getting the demo as soon as its available, and giving it a whirl.

ive also got the game on preorder, but the US launch is on the 21st, and the EU launch on the 24th.

also, id recommend checking out amazon for a boxed version of the game. In the UK, i got it preordered there for less than what i wouldve found on steam. Steam isnt always the best value, but every once in a while does have an absolute corker of a deal.

I assume your talking about the full version and not the demo? I plan on giving the demo a shot on the old crusty P4... and preparing to be disappointed in performance. (Are there demos available via Steam, I wonder.)

Reports on Bioshock performance on a MBP would be appreciated!  :nods:

I'm talking about the full version - as teflon said, there are demos for some games on Steam, but not for all.

I haven't gotten around to putting Windows on my MBP yet, though I will do so soon - I'll probably be playing it on my PC.

Yeah, the only stuff that's a great deal on Steam are things that are already in the bargain bin - for new stuff it tends to be about the same as retail stores. The convenience factor tips the balance for me though. I'd just as soon be done with discs and boxes of all sorts.

The Bioshock Movies on this page are pulling me in... Holy crap!

Paraphrased: Where the player is allowed to make meaningfully choices and the question becomes will you exploit the residents to survive or risk it all to become their savior? Check out the "Hunting Bid Daddy" movie on the link.

What are the odds that this will run decently (read: around 30 fps) on a Core 2 Duo iMac with a X1600 and only 1GB of RAM, at low to medium settings at the normal resolution of 1440 x 900 (it will have widescreen support, right?)?

Of course, I could just wait a day or two and see how the demo performs, but I would prefer to get somewhat educated guesses on possible performance now rather than wait for actual experience running it later.

I tried the xbox 360 demo, it was ok. I'm not sure I'm into the visual style, It was too cartoony.the game play itself was ok. I'm not sure I will be picking up the game. Its just not the kind of shooter I'm in to.

youll be GPU limited for sure, and id guestimate that the settings youve said will be ok, but might want to drop down to 1280x800.

That would be good enough for me, let's hope you're right.

This game looks like it's going to be a landmark in the transition of video games from mindless diversions to thought-provoking art. Not that mindless diversions are all that bad...

Played through the demo of bioshock, it felt very limited for a demo past 1 gig. Is it just me or does the graphics quality of the 360 version looked gimped?

Are you into team shooters? BS reminds me very much of System Shock2 in what I've seen of it- very heavy on environmental effects in a hostile space.

What is xbox marketplace?  How are xbox demos gotten hold of- is that part of the xbox live subscription?

Anyone find a comparison trailer for xbox vs DX10? :)

xbox marketplace is the place where you get every downloadable piece of content for the xbox. it can be free or it can cost, and you dont need to pay to look around.
so its all free.

PC demo out today! at 7PM EST.
they say something about getting the latest NV and ATI drivers also out today to get best performance...

This might be a stupid question, but does that include us bootcampers? I was under the impression that the bootcamp drivers were modified to work with mac hardware.

Yes, the marketplace is where you go to buy content for games, downloaded movies, or download avatars and themes for the dashboard, or download free demos and shareware like titles. Only if you own live gold.

Any performance reports on x1600/256MB MBPs with 1GB of RAM? I'm wondering if its worth the bother to install Steam (yet again) and download the demo, or if I should use that time to wash cars and cut lawns to save up for a 360.

its out!
and its on steam, which will easily be the best place to get it from because you wont end up in some stupidly long queue for an hour or something...
im dling now, and might jst maybe have an opinion for you in, oh, about 2 hours.
ill also be giving the new drivers a go and hope they dont trash my install...

ok, even without the special beta drivers, the demo ran pretty smoothly at full graphics 1024x768. and it was very very pretty. the water effects are nothing short of stunning when they need to be for set pieces, and very good the rest of the time (i feel that when you run through the water, the effect could have been better). Theres plenty of smoke and haze going on (take that crytek im in DX9), and the modelling is very good 95% of the time, though theres some objects which arent overly detailed. oh, and while standing blood looks great, the blood that you get when you hit something is just rubbish. it does its job, but leaves you thinking "was that just pink/purple ripples?"
for some reason, i was just expecting a tiny bit more detail over everything...
tomorrow ill try running at 1280x800 and 1440x900, and then also with the new drivers.

voice acting was pretty good, and if youve played dreamfall (and got the voices working, which took me a while), youll recognise the voice of Atlas from there, which was a pleasant surprise.

Overall, it was a very good demo. you dont get to fight a big daddy yet, but you get to use the first two plasmids, and experience the opening 30-45 minutes of the game. The initial fly through the city is brilliant.
i cant wait for the full game to arrive on friday/saturday.

I'd say it's a gamble. It may or may not help. That is why a utility like True Image or maybe Toast to make a copy of the Boot Camp partition might save the user a lot of trouble if the drivers dork up XP. I remember when I first bought UT2k4, it offered me the option to install the "new" ATI drivers included on the UT install disk. Big mistake when I said yeas as I lost my video. Although I could have messed around in safe mode, at the time I was using Norton Ghost and it was a snap to reinstall the partition, restoring XP to a usable state.

I'm currently DLing the BS demo for a go and most likely a laugh on my P4.

Good performance on the MBP? Did you play System Shock 2? I know the 2 games are miles apart but the atmosphere seems to be very similar.

yup (i can read after all ;) ).. i have no idea how, but i find that everything runs pretty smoothly on maximum settings, which is what the game set me to by default. of course, thats at 1024x768, but even when i turned it up to 1280x800 it was good. i experimented with every setting i could and found that nothing really made the game go faster. weird.
of course, i did play through CoD2 with 15Fps on average (3-5 on the beach assault), and Quake 4 with 17 average... so maybe its just my skewed vision, as ive yet to manage to enable an FPS counter (cant get at the console)

one thing i would suggest though is turning off high level shaders. even though it will kill a lot of the lovely shiny, but that primarily applies to the floor. everything else (from HDR to smoke and haze etc. etc. is still there, and once you play without it for a little while you wont miss it. but then it does make all the difference every once in a while when you look down at the floor.

also, if you can manage it (256mb VRAM), go for high quality textures. medium just looks blurry.
