Well, at least the all around mediocrity of this update makes me feel better about having a newly discontinued 17" iMac.

Ugh. That black band just jumps out at me. Why did they do that? The switch to aluminum is fine, but why couldn't they do the whole aluminum thing so it's seemless the way the current white ones are? I won't be updating.

The 7300GT might give it a run for its money.

Also you can't say that you'd be getting that newer (ATI 2600 Pro) GPU for DX10. :P

I think the idea is to have a similar look as the iPhone.

as i keep saying over and over and over, the main problem i have with the machine is its big fat chin!

i think it would have been alright if it looked almost exactly the same as it does now, except that the chin at the bottom was reduced to the same depth as the black band. that would have looked so much better.

I think you're right. The main problem design-wise especially with this new model is the chin. It would look a lot better if it had the same size of border all around and then it would look more iPhone-ish. It also may just be me but I don't like the black on black of the apple logo on the black back of it.

I guess we all can pretty much agree that it might be a good idea to skip this generation. ;) But I almost don't have much hope that any of that will be rectified anytime soon.

The main problem I have with it are the lackluster video options.

I'm bothered by the lackluster video card because when you attach it to a 24" monitor the corresponding native resolution of the LCD brings the video card to its knees... Forcing you to run it in a lower, fuzzy resolution. I miss CRTs for smooth display regardless of resolution.

Update:

Below 30 FPS in almost of the games used in this review:

http://www.extremete...,2151689,00.asp

That is with high detail however, but who wants to buy a new iMac and have to deal with that. I'd at least want to squeeze a year out of it before I have to start turning the detail down.

It does have a blazing fast CPU on the high end, maybe that would counteract some of the negative performance. At least there is no more Intel onboard graphics... yuck.

Am I confuse, or did apple just kill the iMac for a gaming system? For instance, the 7600GT iMac was a NICE gaming system believe it or not. Now, you are stuck with the 2600, and get no option to change it.

What I'm asking, is if any of these new models can stand up to the previous 24" iMac with the 7600?

LOL.

Let's all forget about these awful new iMacs like today was a bad dream, and hope they join the G4 Cube in the Museum of Failed Apple Products And Other Wonder-ful Curiosities.

SJ ain't doing much these days to dissuade me from buying a gaming PC.

Wake me up when Apple actually realizes games are important.

Steve's hatred of all things gaming comes through loud and clear once again.

"Steve, lay off the sprouts and stop listening to Ebert on games for a second and pay attention to the last 20 years of computer entertainment, dude! WAKE UP Steve, please."

dont make me laugh! the 7600 already outpaced the X1600 by miles, it at least level pegs with the 2600 in a game that will heavily favour ATI cards. and every blue moon there is one.

you make it sound like the cube was a bad computer... are you saying the cube is a bad computer?
are we gonna have a problem about this? :P
The new iMac design isnt going to go anywhere good anytime soon. The best we can hope for is that in a few months, when its time to update to Penryn well get some NVidia loving in the iMac.

ill do a quick mockup of what would make this design acceptable to me tomorrow.

The Cube is exactly what I think Apple should release now. Small form factor computer with an upgradeable graphics card. The problem people had was they didn't want em on their desk, but they were too small to be put on the floor.

I honestly don't know why the Apple guys would do this and just throwing it out there, do you think that enough complaints may warrant a change? I mean, from what I have seen, there are a fair bit of people using their Macs for games and with the given specs (not graphics card) this thing could really be sitting pretty with a new card. Are the guys at Apple smart enough to change it if enough people don't like it?
