No way.  What is your cube going to think when she sees you walking through the door with your trophy bride?  I think your next post is going to sound a lot like a cube pretending to be you, posting that you can't post here any more.

Anyway, yup, I ordered a hour ago, but if id done it yesterday, then itd be shipping on friday as opposed to next goddamn wednesday. and why on earth do they predict that its going to take over a week to get from the depot to my house? wtf?? im hoping for end of next week delivery despite the estimated garbage.

but you know the best part? that my MBP is going to be better than Mike's.. oh, and mike? you realise that with shipping lead times of 5 days, theres a heck of a lot more than two people with better MBPs than you.

I just posted some Quake 4 and Doom 3 results comparing the MacBook Pro 15" 2.4GHz "Santa Rosa" to other models of Mac including the Mac Pro, iMac, MacBook Pro and MacBook:
http://www.barefeats.../santarosa.html

The new MacBook Pro is 60% faster than the previous model running Quake 4 at 1280x800 High.
It's 38% faster running Doom 3.

It's still slower than an iMac with a GeForce 7600 GT or a Mac Pro with a Radeon X1900 XT -- as you might expect -- but it's a big improvement.

I'll add Prey, Halo, and UT2004 results later today.

Any results on 128 vs. 256 VRAM?

I won't have that until this weekend.

But I did add Prey, Halo, and UT2004 to the test page linked in my previous message.

Why is the iMac with the 7600 so much faster? I understand that the laptop gpu's are clocked lower than the iMac counterparts because of heat issues, but I expected the 8600M to have more of an edge over its previous generation counterpart.

How much of it is the new drivers, and how much is hardware/heat limitations?

If you look at the card specs you'll notice pretty much the only difference lies with the DX10 support.

Rob, how are you doing your tests?  Are you actually testing the games in an Apple Store?

Comeone refresh my memory: is the iMac's 7600GT a desktop card or a laptop card? If the iMac has a desktop card (albeit underclocked for cooling IIRC?) then it's not a simple generation comparsison. 7600 vs. 8600M.

Anyway, I'm loving the 3D performance of my iMac and Doom-engine games (and UT04). If the MBP can approach that, then that's great. (And even has a good shot at running UT3 I think.)

I'm pretty sure it is also a laptop card which is why I'm suprised with the results.

Laptop AFAIK.. but it seems like the thermal requirements aren't the same as in the MBP. The newest iMac uses MXM Modules.. again as far as I know. Personally I'm interested in how the GPU would perform in an iMac.

Yeah it should be able to run UT3... especially since they are targeting running on a wide variety of hardware.

One reader sent me Flyby numbers for Inferno 1280x800 Max on the 128MB VRAM model. It was identical to what I got on the 256MB VRAM model: 128 FPS.

Bryan (aka QuickSilver), I'm no longer allowed to test in the Apple Retail Stores, as you probably read.

I have to either buy or borrow the machines that I test. It can get costly but it is a writeoff. And lately I've received enough from the Apple Store affiliate commissions to pay for the machines I buy.

The results I posted are for the 15" 2.4GHz model with 2GB of RAM. I'm going to upgrade it to 4GB but I doubt it will affect any 3D game numbers.

I expect to have a 17" 2.4GHz model in the lab by Friday. It will be interesting to see if the core clock speed of the GeForce 8600M GT ramps up higher than the 15" model -- like on the previous MacBook Pros.

I've expect to have access to the 15" 2.2GHz model on Saturday so I'll add all those numbers by Saturday night.

I picked up the top end MacBook Pro (2.4 GHz 256 MB VRAM) and my Halo benches are different than yours.  I ran a test at 1440x900 and got over 60 fps.  I bumped it down to 1280x800 and got 70 fps.  I was using Halo 2.0.1.  I'm rerunning with 2.0.2 right now.
