Here's a snippet from a Gamespot news story released yesterday:

As if the mention of a new Blizzard MMOG wasn't enough, this week also saw rumors spread that the publisher-developer is resurrecting one of its classic real-time strategy series. According to a Korean newsletter partially translated by Teamliquid.net, "StarCraft 2 will be revealed for the first time to the world at Blizzard's World Wide Invitational (WWI)." According to the letter, Blizzard will also use the event, which takes place in Seoul, South Korea, on May 19 and 20, to show off the game, which reportedly has full 3D graphics, a revamped combat system, and a new race.

The official story: In an unusual turn of events, Blizzard freely admits that it will announce a new game at the WWI in Korea, where Starcraft's popularity is at near-fanatical levels. "We do intend to announce a new product at the Worldwide Invitational next month in Korea, and we appreciate the enthusiasm and interest in getting an advance look at what that will be," a rep told GameSpot.

Now I've never played Starcraft but I know there are plenty of fans on this forum. Thought you'd all like to know!

Well..."We have a very strong connection with the characters and settings of StarCraft, and we do plan to revisit that universe at some point in the future, but we don't have anything new to announce in that regard at present."  That doesn't actually rule it out, of course.  Especially since they are making the announcement in Korea.

As for the "new MMOG", they just started looking for people to work on it, so I wouldn't expect that for years.

Havok is physics, not graphics....

I wonder if this game will be a new IP or another lame sequel to another lame MMORPG.

StarCraft 2 = Instant sale to Frost. Yeeeah, baby!

I wish they'd resurrect StarCraft: Ghost too. Obviously the PS2 and Xbox didn't have nearly enough power to do what they wanted with it... but, the 360 and PS3 DO. Metal Gear Solid in the StarCraft universe still strikes me as a winning gametype.

When there's a multiplayer version, I'm going to be on Frost's team. Well, except he doesn't seem to actually need a team...I mean, what's the point? "Hey look, it's Frost and His Merry Gang of Useless Hangers-On!" Or something.

Well, I'd certainly buy it.  But only if they do a computer port.

Zone of Enders would be more appropriate merger.

i think it was more likely that they didnt manage to get the gameplay right... the kind of action stealth thing that they were going for would have been far more difficult to manage than they thought. Obviously, mix this with a change of developers, and then the developer getting amalgamated into Blizzard, and you get one heck of a lot of confusion, and not too much done on the actual game.

but i agree. we want SC:G (haha, this is very similar to the SGC... stargate command??)..

World of Starcraft. (I don't think that is original, but what the heck.)

Plus I heard stuff about "internal power struggles". Blizzard denied that of course. Which means it's true!

Please, no. I would love Starcraft 2, and I would really like the ability to explore that world in a more close-up way, but not if it's a grind-fest MMO like WoW.

surely it would be galaxy of starcraft? theres no possible way that they could constrict the game to a single planet..

but i agree. theyve got one MMO cash cow, and they can use the millions of dollars they make off that to fund other games.

That applies to World of Warcraft as well...there's more than one actual planet involved there too.  So it would still be "World of Starcraft" in the sense that you can use "world" to mean "everything" rather than "planet."  (Yep, look it up.  ;) )

"CARRIER ARRIVED! BUT YOU CAN'T USE IT BECAUSE THIS IS AN MMO SO GO GRIND SOME MORE NOOB."

Personally I hope this is just a normal RTS. They could definitely sell it and make a nice profit even though it's nothing too new or original. There's ten years of pent-up Starcraft passion out there that will ensure them cashola. The only problems I can foresee are:

1. Not meeting the expectations of the community. There's such a huge cult following built around the specific units and everything from the original game, the community (especially the Korean community) may reject the game on a large scale in favor of the original. Some of my Starcraft fanatic friends already hate the idea of a new RTS without even knowing anything about it.

2. The lure of the enormous profits MMOs bring compared to the pretty good but modest profits of non-subscription games.

But whatever they end up doing, I'll probably still buy it unquestioningly.
