For those looking for additional deals on Macintosh/iPod goods this 'Black Friday' should check out your local Apple online store. There are some real deals to be had, including games like Civilization IV.

Once again, apple is preparing sale items for the US and Canadian (and other) Apple stores. Anyone plan to do some online shoppin' tomorrow?

Naah, I have to save my money – some pretty big (and expensive) changes ahead in my life.

Ditto. I might have if a new decent-spec Mini had come around; but then again the discounts in the UK aren't that great... seriously. Next likely buy for me from Apple: probably a 500GB hard drive in January. The Iomega ones Apple sell actually compare favourably with Amazon UK prices (surprise, surprise).

Mac Office looks like a terrific deal. I'm getting that one. I can upgrade my existing Office software on my PPC G5 then carry it over to my next Intel Mac.

I thought Ballmer said you don't get the full Office on the latest Mac version? But I'm assuming you've tried NeoOffice & OpenOffice, & found both wanting. A bit of a pity, if that's the case.

I personally havent had all that much use for MS Office for a while now. My family got the student/teacher copy of 2004 ages ago, and those 3 licenses have sustained us, but personally I find MS Office lacking, word is still a bit crashy when pushed too hard in the wrong direction etc. etc. So Id rather use something free and be disappointed with it than something which costs a few hundred pound and be annoyed with it.

Likewise (& touch wood that it stays that way).

Even with trying to be wholly objective here, it seems to me unquestionably the case that OS X has a plethora of quite outstanding writing packages. I'm very impressed with OpenOffice on my Intel iMac (though only downloaded it over a week ago, so still early days) & likewise NeoOffice on my iBook. But for me the best package for creative writing is probably Scrivener, though others come close.

At a quick glance, Scrivener does look pretty good, but aimed more at a writer than someone who might just need to knock out a letter quickly.
Ive got NeoOffice on here at the moment, and havent needed the use of a text editor for while really. When I do again, I might grab OpenOffice, and give that a whirl, seeing as thats what NeoOffice is derived from, and I was quite happy using that, I imagine itll be just as good.

It's more something like a full body transplantation. From here roughly 160 km to the east. ;)
