I'm glad you've found the cause of the problem. If it was a dead drive after all, then hopefully you shouldn't run into that problem again. (I'll keep my fingers crossed just in case.)

Western Digital, eh? Hmm. My Mac Pro came with a Seagate. I wonder if that's because of the WD drive problem you mention...

no, apple just puts them in at random. there really is no relation (i think)
