BareFeats takes a closer look at the new Mac Pro's PCI-E lanes which can be manually configured. By using Apple's Expansion Slot Utility, you can configure the PCI-E slots to run in 16 lane mode, 8 lane mode or 4 lane mode. Power users would want to reconfigure the bandwidth to provide adequate speed to the cards that they install.

BareFeats put a 3GHz Mac Pro with 16GB of RAM to the test running Quake 4, Doom 3, Halo Universal Binary and Unreal Tournament 2004.

We ran various graphics intensive apps at 1920x1200 High Quality to see how much faster a Radeon X1900 XT runs in the 16 lane (x16) slot as opposed to being installed in a 4 lane (x4) and an 8 lane (x8) slot.
