Looks like Splash Damage is about to start their "open" beta ET:QW. They didn't give an actual date, but they did officially say "soon-ish" in their forums, in this thread.

So far, it looks like the beta might be handled though FilePlanet, though it's unclear if you'll have to be a paid subscriber or not. If you dig around the Splash Damage ET community forums enough, there are links to the beta file on FilePlanet, though it hasn't been officially released yet.

I'd guess that the open beta is Windows only, so it won't do most of us any good. I thought some of Boot Campers might be interested though.

Bif

Update - The open beta is more official now. Splash Damage has put up a blog post with the "First Details". Info's here...

Any thoughts on how to choose between BF2142 and QW? (Other than BF probably arriving first?)

I know QW has fancier graphics (and thus is not a choice without faster hardware). And I know QW has a system to help lead newbies toward useful tasks that help their team--so the learning curve is lower. Also, QW has asymmetric teams/maps, which sounds fun to me.

But I'm not so familiar with BF's strengths. On the surface they are both class-based multiplayer sci-fi shooters with vehicles.

They say that ET:QW has similar requirements to Quake 4. It'll also probably be Universal Binary. BF2142 is Intel only and the requirements don't look lower than for Quake 4 on the PC side. I kind of think that ET:QW has the edge at least for now that there are still quite a few still on PowerPC.

Check out the t-shirts some of the splash damage guys are wearing. ;)

Well, to answer the original poster's question, I've run the Quake 4 demo acceptably on a 1st gen MacBook, so there may be hope at low-res low-detail settings on a MacBook fro ET:QW.
Work: MacBook - 2.4 Ghz Core 2 Duo - 4GB RAM - X3100 graphics.

bear in mind that splash damage are talking about the PC requirements, while Aspyr lowered the mac requirements (is that a first??) to include the last G4 PBs...

its entirely possible that theyll raise it up to, this is just a guess, the 2nd gen iMac G5 with the 9600s.. cos the 5200FX sucks hard, and the 2nd gen was slightly faster... thatd still give a decent user base on the PPC side, even if they say 2ghz minimum...

Looks like Splash Damage is going the "in-game advertising" route too with Quake Wars...

It seems like that might be tacky in a Quake game to me. I hope they will make them look appropriate in the game with weathered effects, not too bright colors, etc.

Also: The public beta is probably going to just be for PC probably?

Yeah, Windows only from everything I've seen. It looks like a final shakedown on a wider cross section of machines than they have access to internally. There was a couple of Linux beta discussions on their forums but, as far as I recall, the devs never commented other than to lock one of them.

Some people with FilePlanet accounts have already been able to get sneak peak keys for the public beta and have already been checking it out. Vids and pics are already popping up around the web.

It looks like in order to even sign up you have to sign up with a windows only gamespy program as well as have an account with fileplanet.

That's not what I was talking about. Yesterday they where requiring you download an additional program.. today it's different but it's still Windows only.

FilePlanet does not seem overly Mac friendly. I do have a free account there from a few years back that is still active, though I never use it for much. There were links people posted to DL the public beta from FliePlanet (couldn't play it without the key of course) that I tried out for kicks. The message I get from those links is...

Quote

Unable to install the FilePlanet Download Control!
Possible Reasons...

The control requires Internet Explorer 5 or higher running on Windows 9x/NT4/2000/XP
If you are running NT, XP or 2000 you must have Administrator privileges
Your Internet security settings do not allow ActiveX plugins to be downloaded
You declined to install the control on the previous screen

Of course, I can't seem to DL anything else with the free account either. Every time I try they ask me to choose my subscription and all the choices have dollar signs in front of them. So maybe they just don't like me, 'cause I'm cheap.
