Hi,

A while ago IMG reported that "The Movies" would be coming to the Mac thanks to Feral Interactive. Both IMG and Feral stated a few months back that the game was nearly finished and a demo would be out very soon.

That was months ago and things are completely quiet. Is there any word on when we might see the game? or at least the demo?

Thanks.

Feral is waiting for Apple to fix some OpenGL issues. That keeps not onyl The Movies, but also Fable and Colin McRae Rallye from being published.

Wow, Fable?!

I knew it was delayed but I thought it was already released!

Is there any word on Apple working on the problems Feral is looking at?

its not problems as such, but Feral have been waiting for Apple to implement multi-threaded OpenGL. Which in turn might help speed the games up. At the moment, only the Mac Pro has this enabled (in its rendition of 10.4.7), and Feral were hoping that 10.4.8 will be released with it, with the very possible outcome that theyve waited for no real reason, and that Apple only adds these changes to OGL in 10.5, which comes out next year...

Well likely only see them after 10.4.8 is released, and that has only just had its first developer preview released. Apple Insider says this "The Cupertino, Calif.-based company also appears to be working on improvements to the operating system's underlying components, including fonts, graphics, modem usage, networking, the Rosetta emulation environment and printing." so its still up in the air really...

Wow... just looked at the system requirements for "The movies".

A minimum 1.67mhz g4... a 2ghz intel is recommended.

Keep in mind when this came out on the PC, the minimum processor was only 800mhz.

I know you lose a little bit in the porting process... but this is one of the biggest discrepencies between the pc and mac sys req. that I think I've ever seen.

what it is is that Feral are going for the minimum to be basically that you can run everything with minimal slowdown.
once the demo comes out, youll be able to play it and see what the performance is, and so make a judgement of your own based on that.

Yep.  I planned to.

But it continues the trend that I've noticed... that ever since the intel macs have come out... it seems like ports all the sudden don't seem to run very well at all UNLESS you have a 2ghz machine.

It's almost as if the porting houses, once they get performance that runs 'o-k' on intel macs... they stop trying to optimize any further.

... but that's just a theory.  :)

I've seen the Mac version of The Movies listed as "In Stock" at three online stores now: Amazon.com,
Interactcd.com and now the Macgamestore has it...

i just got myself Imperial Glory, and, as previously reported, theres a The Movies demo on it...
Also said before was that to get the demo to work, all you had to do was set the date back a bit (ive discovered that its to before the 10th of September)...
I can say that it runs pretty well on my system, at least in the early stages of the game. Ive got the graphics on full, and its pretty and very playable.

Basically, if youve got 1.2Ghz or more, and a relatively competent graphics card, you should give the demo a go and see if its to your standards. 1.6ghz is a bit over the top if you ask me...

This is getting ridiculous. I'll never order directly from Feral again. How fire trucking long does it take them to ship it? Christ! This is just dumb beyond reason. And for whatever reason my more recent e-mails haven't gotten answered either. What the fire truck!

I'm starting to get really upset with the state of mac gaming.

The Movies was supposed to be released in July.
Empire at War might not be playable on PPC machines.
Apparently AoE III is buggy.
And who knows when or if Fable will ever actually be released.

If the developers/porters can't stick to a schedule or keep their fans informed I see no reason to support them.

OK, rant over.

Feral is a publishing house, not porting. The current bout of games are actually being ported by a company called RoboSoft.

as for keeping us informed, Feral has been pretty good about making appearances on the forums to keep us updated or whatever.

finally, when I said "as soon as its released" i meant to say "as soon as Feral releases the demo"
