Varied reactions have been popping up all over the net since the news of the merger between graphics chip maker ATI and processor developer AMD. Of particular note is an interview conducted by Firing Squad, which gets some reaction quotes from Derek Perez, Director of Public Relations for rival GPU maker nVidia.

Interestingly enough, Perez notes that nVidia sees the merger as a victory, touting nVidia as being the sole GPU maker to support both AMD and Intel chipsets. He even goes so far as to add that "ATI's thrown in the towel."

We look at today's news as a positive for the company and there’s a couple of reasons why. Ultimately this leaves us as the only GPU and platform company that will be able to support both AMD and Intel. That's huge. There’s no other GPU company, no other chipset company that’s going to come close to what we’re offering and that puts us in a really good position right off the bat. If you look at those two pieces of business, GPU and platform technology we’ve got four strong brands, SLI, GeForce, Quadro, and nForce which we’re all right now winning versus ATI everywhere across the board and I think you guys will agree with that.
Firing Squad also fished for some reactions from Intel, though at this time they received little more than a "no comment" statement.

Also contained in the interview are reactions from various developers, including Gearbox Software and Obsidian Entertainment. Reactions range from positive feedback regarding motherboards with powerful integrated GPUs to concern that the market may polarize into an ATI/AMD vs. Intel/nVidia battlefield.

In totally unrelated news nvidia has increased the price of all GPUs 10 fold. Nvidia has yet to comment on this move but sources close to the company have heard loud cackling and the sound of champagne corks popping.

Of course, this all assumes that the AMD/ATi gestalt entity will be an idiot and throw away money by refusing to sell video products to people who don't use their CPUs.

Agreed, Tesseract. And that seems silly and unlikely to me.

Merging with another company that has larger financial resources is hardly throwing in the towel. I also doubt that AMD would be stupid enough to force ATI to supply only to their chipset. Anyway, as far as track records are concerned Nvidia are the leaders in the dodgy deals department when it comes to limiting who can use what. They might boast about Quad SLI but apparently it is so 'complex' that only companies like Dell/Alienware will be able to use it... hmmmm. If anyone is going to be the first to cut support for their rival's setup, my bet is on Nvidia.

Actually, it's Intel that got in with the axe first it seems..

Hmm I stand corrected.

By the time the dust settles, the columnist believes that all Mac will feature either NVIDIA or Intel graphics technology by the end of 2007.

I just hope if it comes around this that Intel kicks Nvidia butt to provide proper Mac support.

That nVidia quote reminds me of the fuss Pepsi made when Coca-cola came out with Coke Classic after their much heralded New Coke started to flop. The president of Pepsi even came out with a book, "How We Won The Cola Wars". (Um, yeah, looking around today I can totally see the devastating effects of that "defeat".)

The thing to keep in mind is that the claims of victory are usually just part of the battle itself. Most of it is PR, "Mission Accomplished" posturing and it doesn't mean anything. By making statements like that while ATi and AMD are still working on the merger, maybe nVidia can scare a few business partners into their corner.
