Hello. My mother just made the switch but she misses the packaged games that Windows had. We've searched the internet and these fora, but we keep running into free trials and not free games. Do you know where she could download some free staple puzzle games? Thanks for any help you can offer.

Edit: Yeah, she wants solitaire, freecell, minesweeper, and tetris. Thanks!

Hm, define "staple puzzle games".

Since you are talking about games packaged with Windows, I assume you mean something like solitair, right? I recommend this one.

Search VersionTracker. There are plenty of free versions of all of the above and more.

www.versiontracker.com

Every rookie programmer makes a puzzle clone and vainly thinks he can sell it. Fortunately, there are some more experienced heads who make the games for free.

You might want to see if you can still find Quinn somewhere. It's the best Tetris for Mac out there but has been taken off it's home site because of legal issues.

I apologise. However, plug 'FreeCell' into the search box on the IMG home page, do the same on VersionTracker, compare and contrast the results.

If I remember right, VersionTracker's game files are on the macgamefiles.com server.

Quinn is definitely the best Tetris game for the Mac (and it's UB).  You can get it from Versiontracker here.

Search on MacGameFiles, not IMG.  There's plenty of results on both searches.  Though I agree, use MGF for games...

Yeah, VersionTracker doesn't actually host any files, they simply link to various other hosts.  In the case of games, that is often MGF.

You're semi-right.  It's still available from most sites though, including this site.

If you can you want to find the newest version which is 3.3.3 and has the chat bug fixed.

I haven't linked to anyone but frankly I use VersionTracker and MacUpdate because they offer all software updates, rather than have to go to an additional site that only has games.

OK, you've demonstrated that someone who posts on IMG can fail to recognise the other bits and pieces of associated web magic. So I repeated my test, and put Freecell into MGF search box. I see a list of Shareware products. But the OP asked about Free software. If I do the same search on VersionTracker I see a (longer) list with two Freeware products at the top. Note that those two products are also in the MGF list as shareware.

Hardly.  Just because a company threatens legal action doesn't mean that they're right.  There are many cases when company trademarks become regular parts of the English language (like Xerox).
