I hardly know where to start with this, but I don't have time now. I was completely blindsided on checking in 12 hours after Mr. Simmons posted, and completely taken aback.

My posts were clearly humorous, but taken at face value. I wonder where those films of me playing Marathon came from, the ones mentioned in emails or PMs finishing by suggesting we play co-op some time ("HELL YEAH!"). Figments of my imagination, I suppose, conveniently forgotten in the drive to further glorify Marathon at Halo's expense for some reason ("...but don't drag us down with you because this isn't Halo and Marathon shouldn't even think of trying to emulate a game that tried and failed to emulate the fun of Marathon.").
Figments of your imagination indeed.  I never received or saw a film of you playing Marathon.  The last I heard from you about playing Marathon was that you'd consider it but you had a lot of meat life stuff to do and a big backlog of games to play first.  Hell yeah I wanted to play a game of co-op Marathon with you but you never came through on your end of it.

I don't think you should be critiquing Marathon or even making suggestions for Marathon IV if you have not played Marathon, which by your own accounts to me, you haven't.  Just ONE game in the Marathon Trilogy would be enough.  That just seems so elementary to me.  If that hurts your feelings, sorry, but I don't think you should be trying to rebuild Marathon IV into a Halo IV just because it's the closest game you know to being Marathonish.

And no, I don't think Halo was as fun as Marathon but then I've made that clear to you over the years.

Lord Brixton tells me I was out of line, and I trust his judgement.  Sorry if i spoiled anybodies day.  I'll just try to gracefully bow out of this conversation and let you guys take it where you will.

This is degenerating into girly man land. Neither of you guys should take it so hard. Unless your jaw breaks off in debate from too many heated right hooks, it's all fun and games. Let's be men, and instead of emo-ing the thread up, we'll keep figuring out how to make Marathon IV great with all the stuff that truly kicks ass.

Briefly, I'd like to praise BC for his sensitivity, tBC for his decency, and Frost for his wit before moving forward with the planning of the game of 2008.

Having a separate multiplayer app works nicely in CoD, giving you the choice of an all-the-pretties SP experience while still leaving the settings a bit lower for full whip-pan vidmaster nastiness in Deathmatch.

That might be a thing for Bungie/Wideload/Brad Nemo to consider.

And I'm really warming to the 'defence of the Mjolnir factory' line..

maybe they could just have a checkbox in the vid settings saying tone it down a bit for multiplayer, adding like 10FPS or something? thatd save on leaving the game and reopening a specific MP one. Of course, if youve got you ridiculously powerful machine, you can just have all the settings on full anyway.

Im thinking this thread should go over this way.. head for the hills

If you there was a combat cyborg (or ten) in the early stages of construction and some major trauma occurred to its interfaces - say the kind of thing that might have been caused by an orbital bombardment or discharge of an energy weapon in the Clean Room - then might it start behaving erratically? Disobeying orders maybe? Or turning on its own forces in error?

Sort of like a SPNKR-equipped defence drone.

Imagine a level where you went up against those babies.

I should probably excise my Haloesque affronts to Marathonery.

I may be back, or I may not be. If not, I will miss some of you, and by now most of you know who you are.

Adieu.

To think that Marathon vs Halo could elicit such emotional responses. Relaxxx guys. :)

I liked Halo, but see the differences with Marathon. And I can see the Marathon weapon set for Marathon IV which would be my preference. It's a preference that anyone is free to disagree with.  What the heck, you could simply take Marathon, all of its elements, upgrade it to modern graphic standards, and I'd play it again.

I'm skeptical there ever will be a Marathon IV especially for Mac only! And if Bungie does it, it will be an XBox exclusive for 2 years. (Yes I said that before.) So you can plan on playing it in your retirement. :P Or I might be compelled to purchase one of those evil consols. BTW, I just loved double shot guns and remember the rush playing the map: For a Few Shotguns More.

I never tried to say any M4, or any other game, should imitate Halo, or the two-weapon set is the best, should be standard, etc. etc. I tried to humorously make some points about balance but was taken too seriously by some. I like 'unrealism' and little red wagons o' weapons too; they're fun and an accepted shooter standard. I just thought Halo was a refreshing alternate take on the issue. I'll replay Q2 and its expansions at some point, and enjoy it; and I've no beef whatsoever with BC having whatever weaponset he wants, even augmented with new ones. I thought that was implied, but much can go awry with communication on teh Internets.

On that other issue, BC confused 'sent' with 'mentioned/referred to,' so I dug up and sent him a years-old film of me playing Marathon in all its software-rendered glory yesterday morning, so hopefully that's now settled.

Carry on, and I will observe while youse guys work out the perfect weapon set for a fourth installment of Marathon. I will keep teh funny where it belongs, in other threads. Sorry for any trouble.

I hardly think we can get the M4 spec nailed down without our two best guys on the case!

So, can we all get together & solve the most important question.

Which alien weapon? The Pink Snail or the Magenta Firehose?

Do either of those use Wave Motion tech? The Firehose sounds likely- and amusing- and is magenta to boot, but snails have that whole 'slow/stealth' thing going on. Tough call.

Pink Snail, Magenta Firehose- colloquialisms for Jjaro artifacts?

Wow. Firehose sounded better, but Pink Snail would look way cool under the Advancedest Shaders option in the M4 Engine!

Pink Snail FTW! The Pink Snail had an awesome horizontal spread for putting the smackdown on The Evenly Spaced Pfhor Fighter Waves in the Pfhor scout ship. The Magenta Firehose is just a substandard reimagining that works like every other gun.

im thinking all three...

youd have fists as you standard melee, but then you can pick up the pfhor staff and then that becomes your default, that way it saves on having an unnecessary weapon...

thats something which other shooters could learn from, dont just have the guns getting bigger and bigger, but have an overlap so that its kind of like an upgrade, and then you can scrap the lesser weapons (which use the same ammo). of course, itd have to be carefully balanced so that the new one doesnt use up too much ammo etc. etc.

Do you think it would make it too geeky to have some behaviour models for the weapons? Overheating barrels, randomly generated ( & rare) jams, faulty fusion pistols, that kind of thing. Just adding a layer of fuzzy logic unpredictability to the old point-and-shoot.

The Alien weapon should be especially flaky.

hmmm.... i think behaviour models for some weapons... like if theres an overcharge weapon, it should be unstable as if its not something youre meant to do with it, and it just keeps building till you see the barrel start to glow or something, and then you need to shoot or die... something like that.

also there should be a ridiculously accurate hit-model, which necessitates accurate projectile prediction, and you can hit weapons, which then become finicky and flaky... not to mention that they might asplode..

oh, and well need a proper implementation of GHOUL like damage effects, so that you can blow an arm off and then the AI adapts to having a limb less (steal the code from SPORE) or a damaged limb, and also assesses its chances against you and acts appropriately. So if it hurt its leg, itd get to some nearby cover and try to pick you off cos it knows that it cant run away. If it has a arm blown off it might use its weapon one handed, or run away, or play dead and when youre not looking try and take you from behind..

now THAT would be immersive as hell, pumping rounds into everything that falls over.
