i was mainly wondering if youre allowed to have a physical copy of the downloaded version, i already knew about the paranoid encryption system. id only ever get the boxed version anyway, but was just wondering.

so im guessing that id you cant back it up they keep a record of you and let you redownload if necessary.

AFAIK you can make backups of your steam downloads, but you still have to be able to connect to actually play anything.

Actually, you can play HL2 in single(?) player mode without having an Internet connection, according to our head programmer. He's off sick today (hung over from a huge Polish bash last night I suspect) so exact details tomorrow.

Well, ok. Once you've activated it, you can start it up without a network connection (let alone internet, you'll have to unplug the cable or disable the drivers). Now it'll only let you play for less than a month or so without activating it again.

Thanks for clarifying bb. That's still enough time for taking it on vacation on your laptop though.

I can't remember which offhand, but IIRC there's a checkbox in setup that, once checked, allows you to play SP offline basically indefinitely after activation. I'll post back when I come across more info.

I d/l the HL2 demo and associated Steam thingy today for the work 17" to see it's performance with the 128MB card. Nice so far but I want to get fps and more info as it gets hectic a bit more into the game and will post. Lovely and playable so far though.
