My creative director just came into the office to install one of our licensed copies of 3ds Max v8 on our 17" Intel iMac and after doing a normal install and selecting software rendering mode on startup, Max v8 runs perfectly!!!! It runs fast, renders very fast using Mental Ray, works perfectly. It seems to be as fast as his main 3GHz PC working within the application.

We rendered a 100 frame 640x480 animated walk cycle movie with 35,000 polygons (with rippling water) in less than 3-1/2 minutes using the MS video 1 codec. We're trying more experiments this afternoon and will pass along details.

This is very good news, indeed!

Not surprising though...3D rendering programs don't really need 3D graphics acceleration.  I ran Blender for a while on a 600MHz G3 with no graphics acceleration, and it was quite usable, though the menus rendered a little slowly.  Even solid-shaded previews were usable.
