They should just merge Doom with Wolfenstein. You'd fight nazis monsters from 1944 in a far far away galaxy in 2125 (through a warp zone, obviously!). Doc Berchuger would be possessed by the demon Hitler soul and would plan to... imagine... conquer the world !!!

Wow. Doomenstein 6: the comeback of the resurrection of the return 2.

... and more arthritis. Set in 2020, when Himmler and Hitler (Ha! the rhyme) join forces once more to bring you a zany and all around crazy comedy set in Castle Anthrax with zombies and Nazis all around...

Id is just licensing all of their IPs at the moment (im pretty sure that RtCW isnt in house), but working on a new one whic no-one has heard anything about... So i dont see how that affects the output of Id. Theyre literally a huge company, so they have the resources to divert to quality control of the 3rd parties that they are getting to create their next game. No complaints from me. Except about Doom3. The story wasnt all it was cracked up to be from what ive seen...

That's the first time I've seen a ~30 man company called huge.  ;-)  Don't mistake the Ferraris owned by a handful of id stockholders as an indicator of company size.  id is small potatoes business-size wise. (id had sales of $30 million US and profits of $10 million US last year).  The development costs of a new game could easily burn through that $10 million and more.  The money keeps id independent, but that's about it.

(As an aside, in a way id is similar to Apple in that they have an impact on their field (way) out of proportion to their size.)

Story? Story? Id is not the house that story built.

I think I heard a rumor from Bernie via SPK (so you know it's true) that iD and Bungie were collaborating on "Halostein 3: Springtime for Hitler." Now that should have some story. And funny voices. (Short, blond Aryan Über... Grunts).

Oh, I've said too much already... :)

i meant that theyre big in terms of their influence. They can take their time with any game that they want, and so they can just divert one person to look after the quality of their licenses, and then have a review every once in a while. maybe i shouldnt have said literally.

Doom3 was hyped as being the atmospheric re-envisioning of the original game, with an explanation for what is going on, and a proper story line. just ended up being a generic Half-Life wannabe (admittedly, Half Life hardly pushed the boundaries with its story line either) with cheap scare tactics... like zombies hiding in cupboards... yeah, good one.

No, Godwin's Law states you have to compare someone to Hitler.  A simple mention of Hitler or an in-context mention of Hitler doesn't invoke Godwin's Law.  :)

I think *John Carmack* is a big influence because of his wizardry with game engines.  I think id has lost some of its influence given the increased competition from other game engines and from the mixed reception of Doom 3.  It will be interesting to see if the Doom 3 engine gets licensed nearly as broadly as the Quake 3 engine was.

The cost of the pre-GPLed Quake 3 engine license was "a $250,000 guarantee against a 5% royalty of the wholesale price for the title".  I imagine the Doom 3 engine is in the same ballpark.  As a counter point, the Unreal 2 engine license is $350,000 (note: a PC license covers Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X with no additional costs) with a 3% royalty.

Like ...?

I have seen games with better art, that make better use of tech, etc. but their engine is still right out at the front.
