What is immersive? Being there? Suspended disbelief? Playing for long periods of time?

A game is a sum of its parts. The game either draws you in or not.

For me immersion touches my imagination, much like a book and draws me in with all the elements that make up a game.   Fallout 1 and 2 did this for me.

If I am into the game, I really don't sit back and think a certain part isn't immersive, unless something happens during the game to pull me out.

I don't want to hijack the thread, but it is interesting to consider.

You know whats really funny?

You can kill children, and eat corpses in the game.

But you can't shoot at groins.

I'm sure that if you'd ever been shot in the groin you'd understand their wonderfully warm sensitivity to the forgotten victims of that particular atrocity.

Well yeah, otherwise there would be no more children to kill. :)

IIRC you probably can't kill children (and some other unkillable NPCs) in the game, which is one of the Fallout Community's grievances as one of the hallmarks of Fallout is that it took a very laissez-faire approach to the player. The player could kill virtually anyone as long as they were prepared for the consequences. For example, if you killed children you would be ambushed by bounty hunters as you traveled the wastes.

Also, you can't shoot at the eyes either, which annoys me much more than the lack of groin shots, since blinding my enemies was my main tactic in Fallout 1 and 2.
