I'm downloading this now.

The minimum requirements call for "Original game data files".

Anyone have information on this - is there source code that needs to be downloaded as well?

Thanks for any help you con give me on this.

I work for Volition, and we did not release this.  This is some sort of "port" made by a fan.

In that case, I would think, just like all the other Freespace ports, the original CDs/data is still required.

The file size is about 1.5GB, so if Volition didn't release it, I'd say you'd better ask somebody have a look at it. It's way too large to just be an OS X port of the executable. I haven't downloaded it and won't either until I know it's all fair and legal.
You shouldn't ask yourself such worthless questions. Aim higher. Try this: why am I here? Why do I exist, and what is my purpose in this universe?

(Answers: 'Cause you are. 'Cause you do. 'Cause I got a shotgun, and you ain't got one.)

If this is an illegal download, please let me know and I'll delete it.  I only downloaded it because the title of the thread indicated that the file was "freeware". PS > I bought Red Faction a while back from Small Dog Electronics, and I'm a fan of Volition's work.

Have at it!  I don't see any reason why you should worry about downloading it.

If it's illegal, the people that hosted it are the only ones who'd need to worry.

Interplay owns the trademark, so it'd be their responsibility to put a stop to this.  And, since they are somewhere between bankrupt and barely keeping their heads above water, I don't think this is very high on their radar.   ;)

That is the same exact same file that Versiontracker links to. At least it is the same size.

Removing the link might be a good idea though.

That's too bad about Interplay. Some of their games (Fallout and Fallout 2) are really good.

Edit: I downloaded the version from Versiontracker, and it is the full version. You don't need the PC cd's. If you find anything out about the legality of it iMac Man, say something. VersionTracker generally doesn't post links to anything illegal, so maybe the people who did it had permission, or maybe VersionTracker just screwed up on this one.

As I replied to the PM of one of the mods, I am/was? under impression that EULA of Freespace 2 allows this. I do not have it handy atm, but should be able to find it somewhere in this mess I call my apartment :) I apologize in advance if I am wrong however.

The EULA, oddly enough, allows FS to be shared with friends.  I don't think posting it on the internet counts as sharing it with "friends" though....   ;)

The official Freespace2 site hasn't been updated for ages.  No news from them if this is on the up and up.

And I appreciate your good attitude and willingness to cooperate.   This seems to be a very gray area right now, if anybody finds something that resolves this issue one way or the other please post it here.

Interplay went away in 2004 and the game's already seven years old, which could be two reasons why it was released as freeware.

What are some of the sites out there that have mods and missions? And are they compatable with this Mac version?

Volition released the source code. Think Wikipedia mentions it too. The question is of course, can the actual game be distributed legally, even with freely available source code and such a cool EULA .
