Aspyr Media has announced that it will be bring QUAKE 4 developed by Raven Software and produced by id Software, to Macintosh. The game, which is licensed from Activision, is scheduled for release in early 2006.
The long-awaited sequel to QUAKE II®, QUAKE 4 enlists gamers in the role of Matthew Kane, a member of the legendary Rhino Squad, to penetrate deep into the heart of the Strogg war machine and engage in a series of heroic missions to destroy the barbaric alien race. QUAKE 4 begins only moments after the events of QUAKE II, with the Earth’s fleet launching a massive offensive to the planet Stroggos. As Matthew Kane, gamers invade the alien stronghold, fighting alone, along side other Marines, and in mechanized walkers and hover tanks as they encounter the Strogg and their disturbing amalgamations of man and machine. Built on id Software’s revolutionary DOOM 3 technology, QUAKE 4 also features fast-paced multiplayer competition modeled after the speed, style and feel of QUAKE III Arena. Stay tuned to IMG for more on QUAKE 4 in the coming weeks. Return to Full Article - InsideMacGames News |

Well done, Aspyr!
But I gotta admit I'd rather see Enemy Territory: QuakeWars announced... Anyway, great to see Q4 coming after all. |

Q4 is a fun and well made game. It's good to see that it's coming to mac.
Unfortunately I've already bought and played it on my pc and I will not be spending 50 usd on another copy of it. You guys need to work out a way to get games porting before they are released so you can get them out for mac closer to the time they are released for pc. At the very least announce if its coming to mac when the game comes out for pc. You are losing sales by doing it the way you do it now. Surely you didn't work out this deal in the time since the game went on sale. |

QUOTE(GlendaAdams @ December 15th 2005, 09:34 AM) Brilliant! I'll be buying this one. Let me know when I can pre-order. This game appeals to me more than Doom 3 ever did. From the reviews and trailers I've seen, it appears that there are more varied (and more outdoor) environments than Doom 3, with all the same graphic goodness. Any news/info/speculation on the multiplayer for the Mac side? -------------------- PRIMARY MAC :: 2.5 GHz Quad G5 :: 4 GB RAM :: NVidia 7800 GT

Any news/info/speculation on the multiplayer for the Mac side? The multiplayer in Q4 is EXACTLY like Q3 only a little slower and with fewer, lower quality maps. I have been seriously addicted to Q3 for a long time so its not necessarily a bad thing that Q4 multiplayer is so similar but there are only like 6 DM maps and they aren't really that great and they are pretty bland looking. It's obvious once you play it that Q4 multiplayer was an after thought. It is possible that the community will kick out a ton of good maps though. The engine has potential. For really kick ass multiplayer in the quake universe I'm betting on Enemy Territory: Quake Wars |

QUOTE(steiner designer @ December 15th 2005, 11:05 AM) Is there a retail version of Quake III for OS X? I've looked briefly through the forums and all I could find was a review of Quake III Arena back in 2000. Do you run Q3 in Classic mode? 1. download the mac patch from Id's ftp (ftp.idsoftware.com) 2. run the patch 3. copy the contents of the baseq3 folder on your cd to the baseq3 folder that the patch created. (Is /Applications/Quake 3 Arena/ if I remember corectly) 4. play the game. There are a few different patches you can download. There is a normal one and an experimental altivec build. I use the normal build because the altivec build occasionally crashes on me. Team arena works as well but you have to copy the missionpack folder from an installed windows version because the files are in a cab file on the install cd and there is no installer for any platform other than windows. I honestly don't know if there is an os x native version you can buy or not but I also don't care since I've bought Q3 four times (2 linux versions and 2 windows versions). Activision has instructions on their web site for how to install Q3 in windows using the linux cd and vice versa so I figure they don't care either. They also have instructions for how to install team arena in linux using the windows cd. |

Sheesh. I'm glad that Q4 is coming to the Mac, but there were SUCH better options out there, like Republic Commando. I suppose Aspyr chose Q4 partially because it uses the Doom 3 engine and they already did a good job porting it.

I hope the guys at Aspyr do a better job of it than the Xbox 360 version, which is quite possibly the most cynical (or inept) console conversion seen to date, and hands-down winner of worst launch title.
On the 3.2Ghz multi-cored PPC variant beast, Q4 has the kind of slowdown I haven't never, ever, had to experience before on a home console. Mr Carmack recently said that the 360 enjoys "far and away the best" development tools. How ironic. I won't even mention Raven, it would only come out as a bunch of swearwords. -------------------- Ironing his Moschino's...

I'm surprised it took somebody this long to mention the hardware needed to run this beast of a game. I missed out on D3 because it wouldn't run well on my computer and I know I'll be missing out on Q4 as well. I mean you could barely find a machine that would run D3 well on the mac, and now Q4 is coming out soon and it will be much more demanding. Woopie, what percent of mac owners will be able to play it? 2%? |

QUOTE(FunkyGumII @ December 15th 2005, 03:50 PM) I'm surprised it took somebody this long to mention the hardware needed to run this beast of a game. I'm surprised everybody doesn't already know that the 3.2GHz processor(s) in the Xbox 360 aren't anywhere near as powerful as a 3.2GHz G5 would be. That said, the system requirements are pretty high on the PC side, and Doom 3 doesn't get the same performance on PPC as on x86 for various reasons that have been discussed to death. On the other hand, Quake 4 can apparently be multithreaded. On the other other hand, the gains of doing so seem to be questionable. Who knows...but Aspyr must have some notion that a reasonable number of people will be able to run Quake 4 OK or else they wouldn't invest the resources into porting it, only to have it be purchased only by those with quad Power Macs with X1800 graphics cards (assuming those are made for Macs). --Eric |
