Does anyone know whether Riven (and Exile, by the way) will run in Classic mode under Panther and/or Tiger?  I know Myst runs just fine in Classic when using X.3, but I saw somewhere that Riven will not run under OS X.

That would be wrong.  I tried it just last month or so, and it works fine, except the transitions between scenes (if you have them turned on) don't happen.  Or more likely, they do happen but are too fast to really see.  But that's really pretty minor.  Exile works in Classic, but the sound is very noticeably out of sync.  Fortunately that doesn't matter, because Exile is a native OS X app which works perfectly (unless you have a dual processor machine, in which case you have to temporarily disable one of the CPUs or else some of the sound stutters horribly).

Thanks for the Riven info.  But I do have a question on Exile.

Is only the DVD version for OS X? Or is there just an update?  I thought Exile came out in the days of OS 9.

There is a patch which adds OS X compatibility. Download it here.

I don't know about that. I've tried just about everything I can think of to make Exile work with my DP G4/1.25 Ghz, including disabling my second processor using the CHUD tools. I even tried replacing the version of the Bink audio library with the version that came with the NWN demo (apparently the latest version)...nothing seems to work. Even on my SP G4/400, under OS X Exile is a complete mess; the ambient sound from some areas carries over into areas which should have different ambient sounds, and sometimes the ambient sounds are the only sounds you can hear. And even with only one processor enabled the movies still don't work.

I've pretty much given up on running Exile under X, and I only run it with Classic.

Riven also does work under Classic, but the resolution is locked at 640x480 (I think), and for some reason my screen's resolution won't change, so I end up with a large field of black with a litle postage stamp of the game in the middle.

If it's anything like Giants, disabling the CPU with CHUD won't do it; you have to disable the CPU by changing the Open Firmware boot arguments and then restart. The command to do that from the Terminal is:
sudo nvram boot-args="cpus=1"
(To re-enable the second CPU, run the same command but with the 1 changed to a 2, and restart.)

What version do you have?  With 1.27, at least, Exile works perfectly.  I played through the whole game earlier this year and there are no problems at all (as long as I disable the second CPU, and just using the CHUD tools does work; no need for OpenFirmware malarky).

Hmm...well, I'll try again with CHUD. I am running 1.27, but disappointingly there wasn't much difference from the original 1.22 OS X binary, aside from Ubisoft plastering their logo all over the menu screen. That OF trick sounds promising, though.

And ironically enough, Giants works flawlessly on my DP machine.

Grr, you lucky person. If I don't disable a CPU at boot time, Giants inevitably crashes before I can complete a mission.

I never had any problems with Giants, but I got Exile bundled with Revelations and found the former pretty much unplayable on my dual G5.

I have a dual G5; it works fine.  Just turn off one of the CPUs.

Somebody told me this before but I can't find the post.  What program do I need to disable a CPU?  I believe this might help me solve a crashing problem I'm having with Postal 2:AW.

Look up-thread a few posts...CHUD tools.  Good ol' CHUD.  :)  (It would be in system preferences/processor when installed.)

Thanks.  I googled right after I posted and found the info on MacRumors.  I remembered seeing an Xcode installer preloaded on my Mac so I ran that then found the CHUD package preloaded and ran that too.

All I had to do was lift my eyes a little eh?  Sounds like a lot of work!
