I've played Hearts of Iron II for several days now, and I've come to the conclusion that it's an almost perfect game. Paradox managed to take out everything that made Hearts of Iron I frustrating. Compared to the original, micromanagement is minimal, research is less convoluted, and combat makes much more sense. It's definitely their most solid and playable game thus far.
-- I definitely agree that the gameplay is *much* improved (although i wish they'd spent a little more time on graphics, esp. sprites, which are sorely lacking compared to the original) --
I'm wondering if anyone has encountered what looks like a bug w/ land battles -- in the land battles i've fought, none of the little 'special modifier' icons show up in the space beneath the commanders' portraits -- the 'river crossing,' 'overstacked,' 'special ability' icons etc. They show up fine in air & sea combat, but not in land (??). Is anyone else experiencing this? It doesn't seem like land combat conditions are being taken into account. For ex. i attacked an enemy across a river, and not only did no river-crossing penalty icon show up, but the readout said my troops were attcking/defending with 100% efficiency, which makes no sense.
One other little thing -- the upgrade system seems a little too zealous about making all your units state of the art... when i allocated resources to upgrades, it started upgrading all my Level 2 tac.bombers to Level 3 (even though Level 2 is not "obsolete" yet) -- ?
