Gamespot recently posted that the new Halo is being executive produced by Peter Jackson. Jackson, an Academy Award-winning director, is best known for the recent Lord of the Rings trilogy. From the Gamespot article:

Peter Jackson: "As a gaming fan, I'm excited to bring Halo's premise, action, and settings to the screen with all the specificity and reality today's technology can provide," said Jackson in a statement. "Fran and I are intrigued by the unique challenges this project offers, and we're delighted to be working again with our friends at Universal, and with our new ones at Fox and Microsoft. I'm a huge fan of the game and look forward to helping it come alive on the cinema screen."
The Halo movie is scheduled to hit theatres in the summer of 2007. While no director or stars have been announced, tagging a name like Peter Jackson to the project is sure to bring in some big names.

Very weird!

It seems like Peter Jackson decided to start with niche nerdiness--Lord of The Rings--do something great with it that appeals to everyone... and then instead of riding his fame "higher" into mainstream genres, he chose to "sink" further into nerdiness with every movie :P

Which is not to say King Kong and Halo won't be great movies. Halo has a batter story than Doom I'm sure! (And I know PJ isn't directing Halo.)

PS, speaking of movies with unusual (and probably nerdy) origins... check out Serenity. No background needed: it gets great reviews from people who never heard of the world of Serenity before. Really fun sci-fi adventure, and just a little "weird"!

Ick, don't mention Halo and Doom in the same sentence.

Yes, and I thought Halo was going to be stupid too, but now...

As I've said elsewhere, I'm not sure if this announcement makes me like the idea of a Halo movie more, and makes me like Peter Jackson less....

All right, how much is Joss Whedon paying you?  ;)

I like Firefly too, but every time I hear the word "serenity" I think of this:

Quote

Dale (voice-over): He was the only bloke he knew with a holiday home. Not a caravan, a holiday home. And he reckoned we were the luckiest family in the world.
Dad: Dale, I reckon we're the luckiest family in the world.
Dale (VO): He loved the serenity of the place.
Dad: How's the serenity?
Dale (VO): I think he also just loved the word.
Dad: So much serenity.

Let's put it this way. No one has ever made a good movie thats based on a computer game. Tomb Raider, Final Fantasy, Resident Evil and Super Mario Bros are so amazingly bad that a million critics working for a million years could not describe but one tenth of their crappiness (hyperbolae aside). And all the new ones will suck just as much. Maybe not Max Payne, seeing as that game almost already is a film, but I'm sure that Halo the movie will have me laughing for all the wrong reasons.

Actually, the one video game movie I AM looking forward to is American McGee's Alice (FINALLY going ahead), which will be starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, aka Buffy.

Wow... it all comes back to Joss :) And he's paying me in sequels to Serenity... but I get no payment if the job isn't done. His reputation, for me, is fact. Is solid. ;)

(And what I think of is Seinfeld. "Serenity now!")

Actually, Ebert loves the Tomb Raider movies. (Probably because he thinks there is a nude patch or something. :/ )
