Inspired by the 'Top 100 Mac Games', I was thinking…

We're all dyed-in the-wool Apple people here, right? Ever been tempted by the Dark Side? Ever looked longingly at a Windows box, with its cheap and plentiful high-spec video cards and the seemingly endless cavalcade of games?

I must confess I have, once.

Well, one and a half times.

What nearly turned me was Half Life and, more importantly, the Team Fortress mod: That rocked hard.

What about you?

Tower MacPro 2x2.66GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon / 4gb RAM / Radeon X1900 XT 512 / 20" Cinema Display.
MacBook Pro 1.8 gHz Core Duo  / 1gb RAM / Radeon mobility X1600 128 / 15" LCD
PowerBook G4 1x1.67ghz / 1gb RAM / Radeon mobility 9700 128 / 15" LCD

Half Life 2, so I could continue following the Heat of Battle mod, which started out as a Call of Duty mod.

Bah, we have enough shooters as it is. Just about any good RPG that never made it to the Mac have tempted me ;)

I (half) turned to the Dark Side for Half Life 1 and 2, Command and Conquer Generals and Dawn of War.  And I don't regret it one bit.

How do you figure??

That way I see it, there are no more shooters than there are RPGs or Sims/Themes games...

None really.
Unless you count the Xbox as being "the Darkside"...then again, I've owned one of those since it launched back on Nov 15, 2001.

Thanks to the Sims expansions you might be right on the Sims/Themes games... but there's definitely fewer RPGs than shooters for the Mac in the past and the present.

Looking back a year for major RPG releases:

KnightShift
KotOR
WoW

...and that's about it. Well the two NWN expansions were released almost exactly a year ago if I remember correctly, but I had played them a lot longer since the PC expansions were really cross-platform.

The year before that wasn't that much better. If you look at the MacGameStore there's two pages of shooters and not even a full one with RPGs.

Well, an RPG is grossly different from a sim game so I'm not sure why you'd lump the 2 together, unless you're creating a new category - "genres I don't like". ;)

Off the top of my head (and only counting OSX native, commercial titles):

Shooters:

RTCW
RTCW: ET
Call of Duty + expansion
MOHAA + 2 expansions
BF1942 + 2 expansions
JK2
Jedi Academy
Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force + expansion
STV: EF 2
UT
UT2k3
UT2k4
007: Nightfire
Soldier of Fortune 2
Rogue Spear + expansion
Rainbow Six 3 + expansion
Splinter Cell
Doom3
Star Wars: Battlefront
DF: Black Hawk Down
Halo
Close Combat: First to Fight
Postal 2
AvP
AvP 2
NOLF
NOLF2
Hexen 2
Heretic 2
Max Payne
XIII
Tron 2.0

RPGs:

Knights of the Old Republic
Neverwinter Nights + 2 expansions
Baldur's Gate 2 + expansion
Fallout
Fallout 2
Icewind Dale
EverQuest
World of Warcraft
Dungeon Siege (?)
Diablo (?)
Diablo 2 + expansion (?)

The last 3 aren't RPGs in the traditional sense, but we'll count them to inflate the list. Still, it's clear that the balance is heavily skewed towards shooters.

Unfortunate, but true.  Then again, the ratio of shooters to RPG's on the PC side isn't much better.

Half-Life 1 & 2 were the games the devil tempted me with... and unfortunately it worked

All and all, I still come back to gaming on the Mac though. I just do so much with my Mac, that it's not worth the trouble of working with a Windows world (I deal with that at work every day!).

Brad... I can't thank you enough for the work you have put in to that extensive list. I own numerous titles from that list and love them all. When customers throw that common "There are no Mac games", it is just too easy to form a rebuttal.

It's only ever been one series: GTA. Ever since I saw GTA 2 in action, I have wished longingly that I had a PC with which to play the latest iteration.

   Yeah, that's pretty much the case.

But, I see RPGs as pretty similar to Sims games because you are remotely controlling people/things, and not actually doing the stuff "yourself" like you do in a shooter.

RPGs and Sims are slow, boring, highly addictive games that take a lot of time out of your life.

Shooters are good for quick, action-packed, uhm... shooting action.   :D

Hmmm ... let me think. Ah, this isn't too hard, actually ...

ROME TOTAL WAR!!!*

And maybe the IL2 series of WWII flight sims while we're at it. Hmm, not maybe, a full yes on this one.

And finally, NWN ... just for the Aurora Toolset of course (I do have the Mac version of the game itself, but couldn't find the toolset to install ;) ).

* What else did anyone expect me to say?

So? Lets be honest, if you build a PC gaming rig and you know how to keep it in shape, gaming is bliss. I intend to build one as soon as I can afford it.

Tempted by:

Elder Scrolls: Morrowwind;

C & C Red Alert series

Half Life 2.

NHL 2004.

But if this never comes to Mac I might add a PC to my stable:

HELLGATE: London. This game looks fantastic.
Work: MacBook - 2.4 Ghz Core 2 Duo - 4GB RAM - X3100 graphics.
Home: Mini - 2.0 Ghz Core2Duo - 2 GB RAM - GeForce 9400 graphics.

To be honest, none.  There are several games that I'd definitely buy for the Mac if they were ever ported, but nothing tempts me to actually spend money on a PC.
