I'm in the beta as well. Needs some more tuning to be really great, but it certainly has a promising pack of features.
I wouldn't expect a Mac version though. The game is going to be released on Oct. 30 and after that, they'll probably be focusing on patching bugs and adding online content.
Then again, it runs very well in Bootcamp. And that extra reboot makes it a little less tempting, because addictive it is. However you can spend considerably less time and still achieve something, than for example in WoW.

So is the demo supposed to just leave you running around without a "congratulations, you have to give us money now!"

Pretty much. I hear from Beta folks that the game is much better than the demo portrays, but way to go for worst demo I've played in a long time.

Yeah, after playing both the Hellgate demo and the Taluba Rasa beta I'd pick the later (if I was going to get myself into another MMO, which I'm not).

Forget that bloody demo, HGL is THAT much better in the beta (was, I should say, as the beta is over).
Especially the last patch of the beta fixed a lot of things ppl were complaining about. I'm now quite positive the game will be a success after launch.

The beta is over. The game is going to be released on Halloween.
It will likely be in stores this week.

Sometimes. Hardly a problem though. They fixed a lot of little annoyances. Of course some still remain, but then again, they're already working on the next (content) patch.
WoW's initial release was rather rough too, but was refined over the course of over 2.5 years by now.

I don't remember that, but I'm not implying there were no bugs at all. It seemed pretty polished even in the Nov beta.

Thought about getting it. Now I wont, because there's no LAN. Somehow, this whole thing feels commercialised to perfection..

I've never seen an MMO with LAN support.
Don't want to defend the game, or the studios, but you'd be wrong to think Hellgate has to fill all the holes the genre has had in the past.
They already solved a lot of problems in terms of grouping, timesinks etc.
Gotta admit Diabo 1 on LAN was fun though. Then again, you could always play it over the internet and still be in a LAN.

Well, Hellgate is no real MMO, more a single player game with tacked on MMO functionality. What Flagship is doing is basically as if Blizzard would charge you for the Battlenet.

I hate connecting to Battle.net just to connect to a computer thats a meter away. It's the most useless thing ever. Or any internet connection over a direct one.

Hellgate is a diablo clone, set in the future. Only they're tampering with the bits that made Diablo so successful, and they're not original enough to pull something like that off.
I don't see Blizzard make you agree to a EULA that has spy/ad-ware bits in them. or make anyone pay for "more content". I'd rather have an expansion.
And this thing with the LAN, for "security" reasons, it's just because they wanted to push a game that wasn't finished, in my opinion. Who the hell said they'd have to "expose server workings" if you build in a LAN functionality.. oh wait, only if you dont actually bother putting an effort into a feature.. yeah. I'm dissappointed. But what the hey, maybe someone will conjure up a server tool that makes people make servers on their own..

They do: the WoW EULA contains a passage like this.

"We do what we must, because we can."
"Gaming on a Mac is like women on the internet." — "Highly common and totally awesome?"

Now see, stuff like that just wont work in Europe (atleast in the german-speaking area). Americans are getting what they deserved, arguably, because their legal system is really horrible. But I didn't know that about blizzard, thank you.

By the way, to any U.S. residents, no offence, I just don't like your government or institutions.

No LAN?!?!?! IMO, the only capacity in which the game would be fun was over LAN. Hellgate London definitely isn't a AAA game (at least from what I've seen in the Beta and I doubt they redid the game for that actual release), but as a bargain bin LAN game, I would have considered buying it.
